The 5 Best Study Spots at Holy Cross

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

Let’s be real for a second: studying can really stink – especially after hours spent in classes, meetings, and running up and down the many stairs on campus. Finding the right place to study is important to both your studies and your sanity. Tried and true, here is a compiled list of some of my favorite study locations on campus:

  1. The Depths of Dinand: In the middle of winter, amidst all the snow, make good use of the cozy stacks. Cubicles are fantastic if you are on your own and need to bang out a paper or grab a comfy chair if you’re with a friend. The stacks are great, because they are one of the quietest locations on campus and are very conducive to work. In addition, they usually less busy than any of the main rooms – totally minimizing distractions.  The only problem is that you’ll find yourself in a sauna if you go there any time before mid-September or after April…
  2. The Science Building/Café: This is one of my personal favorites – especially after the café closes and it gets a little quieter. Tables and couches are perfect for group work or projects. This is also a great spot when Dinand is too hot in the early/late months of the semesters. The actual science library is also a great place to get work done. The cubicles are spacious and quiet if you are looking for a more “scholarly” atmosphere. They also have really great private study rooms with whiteboards that are great for Chem/Bio review.
  3. Rehm Library: Rehm is totally perfect for studying during the day or in between classes.  Although it’s generally tough to snag a table there during the day, – it’s a popular place for a reason – it’s a bright and airy study space. It’s also very quiet which, as I’ve said before, is conducive to productivity. This is where I go when I’m looking to get something done quickly before class as it is central to everything on campus.
  4. Find a Random Classroom: This is one that most people don’t consider, but I highly recommend during finals and busy times of the semester. They’re always quiet and you can go with a big group of people and each person can have her own space. They also generally have whiteboards, which are great for group studying and for reviewing for final exams. The one problem I usually find with classrooms is that there is limited desk space to work with.
  5. CB2: Completely underrated but single handedly is the best place to study after the busy hours of the day. The atmosphere in and of itself is reminiscent of a Starbucks – complete with soft music, low-lighting, and the sound of coffee grinders in the background. I love going here late at night and spreading my work out over a table. This is another great spot to visit before or between classes to make the most out of your day.
