What to Expect When You’re Expecting…Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hollins chapter.

We only have two weeks (and some change) left until Finals begin! We asked some seasoned seniors and juniors for their biggest tips for surviving the grueling end of the extra-brief Spring Semester. Here are their top fifteen things to keep in mind when gearing up to make it to the
end of May.

15. “Coffee, coffee, coffee. But not too much coffee.” – Claire McCown ’13

14. “Keep calm and carry on.” – Carolyn Pace ’13

13. “Never stay up the whole night before a final, it doesn’t help! Instead go to bed and wake up early to study. The first two hours after waking up is the time that brian fuction and memory work the best.” – Jackie Lam ’12

12. “Although it may seem impossible make sure you get sleep, even if it means scheduling yourself a nap every other day.” – Erika LaWall ’12

11. “Don’t lose your habits. Yes, you have a 300 page paper and your professors are all expecting you to do the impossible but don’t let that strip you of your you-ness. To keep from going crazy, keep to the habits that make you happy and you will survive (and Tumblr doesn’t count). Exercise, watch ONE of your favorite TV shows, and sleep! School will happen, papers will be written and you can stay sane.” – Sage Otto ’13

10. “Make a list of everything you need to do! When you’re really busy, it’s easy to lose track and having a list will help you keep on top of everything. Plus, it’s super gratifying to cross things off a long to-do list.” – Paris Huff ’12

9. “Remember what your priorities are! Exams, papers, and projects come first, then everything else. Also, drink lots of Red Bull and stake out a spot in the library.” – Minette Morgan ’13

8. “Keep track of all your assignments way in advance. That way, you’ll be able to manage your time better and still get sleep when finals week rolls around.” – Ashley Ellis ’12

7. “Just take it one step at a time. Don’t stress about tomorrow, focus on doing as much as you can one day at a time. Save the partying for after finals.” – Catherine Bertorelli ’12

6. “Eat well. Take care of your body so it can handle the stress to come.” – Angel Liu ’12

5. “Remember to make time for yourself. Have at least three non-academic hours a day for yourself.” – Ameria Marie ’12

4.  “Space out your exams. We’re lucky enough to have the independent exam schedule so don’t overload. Also, make sure you’re getting sleep. Your body needs it to convert short-term to long-term memory.” – Morgan Dean ’13

3. “Snack! Nothing keeps your brain running during study time like nom nom nomming.” – Sage Otto ’13

2. “Save the partying for after finals.” – Catherine Bertorelli ’12

1. “Don’t freak out. Stay calm. Go to the gym to relieve stress if you can, and smile for at least 30 seconds everyday because you WILL get everything done!” – Michele Agopian ’12
