Snapshot Art Exhibition: Instagram and Selfie Art

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

The Cable Factory is also the house of The Finnish Museum of Photography and one of their current art exhibitions is #Snapshot: an exhibition that showcases the amount of photos we all take on a daily basis. The show consists of different installations made of selfies and Instagram photos.

We all take pictures and in today’s society there is a strong tendency to capture even small moments in our lives: our pets, what we wear to school, what we have for lunch…this is all evident in the exhibition.

The museum also decided to show the history and evolvement of photography: old cameras, people taking pictures of themselves through a mirror with one of the first cameras ever invented…this just goes to show how long we have been fascinated about taking photos of ourselves and depicting our lives through photography.

The biggest (literally) piece in the show is a pile of photos, which consists of all the photos uploaded onto Flickr during 24 hours. The pile takes up almost the entire massive room, which puts our obsession of snapping photos into perspective. One of my favorite parts of the show, though, was not even a photo – it was a wall filled with post-its from visitors telling why they take photos. Most of us want to have something to remind us of the good moments of our lives when our own memory fails us. Who here could deny the validity of that explanation?

The museum offers a student discount (student tickets cost 5 euros) and you can find more information about the exhibition on their website.
