Meet Adventurous, Island-Loving Danny Powell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hawaii chapter.

You might recognize this week’s cutie by his friendly personality and lights-up-the-room smile. Danny Powell can be caught skating around campus or at the beach. Luckily, we got to sit down and chill as he described his love for adventures and Hawaii.

Age: 21

Hometown: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Why Hawaii and Manoa?

It was the first school I heard back from. I didn’t really want to apply to other schools. It was chill and I wanted to get out of California.

So I see you catching sharks with your bare hands a lot, tell us about that.

Not with my bare hands! It’s been a while actually. I just caught a black-tipped reef shark. But honestly, I’ve kind of stopped doing that. I’ve been surfing a bunch. I went fishing last weekend, but that was the first time since beginning of junior year.

What do you look for in a girl?

I like girls that are really down to earth. You know, not too stuck up. Outgoing. Just really nice and friendly. I don’t like mean girls. That’s basically what I look for.

Turn offs? Besides mean girls.

I like chicks that can go on adventures, really outdoorsy people. So they need to be able to go outside with me. And I don’t like girls that are really full of themselves.

What’s the most memorable way a girl has hit on you before?

This one time in second grade, this chick, Michelle Charles, told me she liked me in front of my whole class. At the time, I was super embarrassed, but it was really funny. She goes to Harvard now I think. Or Brown. One of those schools. (You go Michelle Charles.)

If you were a girl for a day, what would you do?

I really… I huhh… I can’t think of what I would do… I guess I could just get free drinks at a lesbian bar. That would be the s*** actually.

Tell us an embarrassing (or funny) story about yourself?

Well, freshman year, me and all my boys were giving each other haircuts on the lanai. I was the last one to go and I was getting really impatient so I just grabbed the clippers and started going at it, giving myself a buzz cut. But the clippers weren’t on so I just gave myself an anti-mohawk; took out all the hair in the middle. No one recognized me. I was just kind of under the radar for a month!

Best experience in Hawaii so far?

I just started really exploring the islands. Like I went to Kauai and just fell in love with it. It’s so sick. I just never imagined myself in a place quite like it. I just love being in Hawaii. It’s honestly the sickest place.
