Becca Ramos ’17, president of Delta Gamma, is a junior living in Cabot House. This is part two of a four part “Go Greek” series.

When her advisor questioned her ability to get into Harvard, Elle Woods defended herself: “I once had to judge a tighty-whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi. Trust me, I can handle anything.” I’ve never had to judge a tighty-whitey contest, but just as Elle experienced with Delta Nu, Delta Gamma has prepared me to succeed both in college and in life better than anything else has (fun fact: Elle was actually a member of Delta Gamma in the novel!).

It’s easy to say that joining Delta Gamma was the best decision I’ve made at Harvard, but it’s a lot harder to explain why. I can tell you about the times that I’ve been sick or stressed and my sisters have brought me ice cream and soup. I can tell you about all the times that I’ve been involved in a show or athletic competition and my sisters have come out to support me. I can tell you about how inspired I am each and every day by the incredible places my sisters go and the things they do, and I can tell you how working with our leadership team has made me a better leader, sister, and person.

But at the end of the day, I can’t truly explain to you what Delta Gamma means to me, because the feeling of coming home to these women is more powerful than I can explain in words. Home isn’t a place – it’s a feeling, and this sorority is without a doubt my home at Harvard.

When I walked into the first round of recruitment freshman year, I’m going to be honest: I felt a little overwhelmed. But over the course of that night, I met many of the most accomplished, friendly, and genuine women that I have met at Harvard. I haven’t looked back since.

My sisters make me smile and laugh every single day. Whether it’s through our incredible sisterhood events in our space (“the Cove”) including movie nights, guacamole making, holiday parties, shopping trips, and everything in between, or our date events and formals each semester, there’s truly no place I would rather be than with my sisters by my side. I love attending a capella  shows and Eleganza, hanging out at Harvard-Yale, running through the yard on Housing Day, and so much more with my sisters; they make my life better in more ways than I could ever count.

My sisters have taught me to take on challenges and be confident in everything I do, because they always believe in me and have my back. They have taught me what support truly looks like through their everyday actions, and they have taught me the importance of living out our motto: “Do Good.” My sisters constantly inspire me with their passion to help others, both through our national philanthropy, Service for Sight, and beyond. Service for Sight was founded in 1936 and inspired by the needs of Ruth Billows, a sister who was blinded in a childhood accident. Each year, our chapter dedicates ourselves to helping an important worldwide issue, while also becoming closer as a chapter and a national sorority as we find meaning in continuing the work of one of our own sisters.

I mentioned that home isn’t a place, and I stand by that. For me, home is wherever my sisters are. I know that any place they are, I have the most loving, supportive group of women who stand by me through the highest highs and the lowest lows.

Delta Gamma is more than just a nautical theme, because we remember that every anchor we wear represents our hope and the bond of our sisterhood. Delta Gamma is about finding a group of a hundred women who are with you through every CS50 pset, every late night trip to Insomnia, every OCI interview, and every other time you need a good laugh, cry, or hug. Delta Gamma is a lifelong community filled with sisters who will inspire and support you every day for the rest of your life. Delta Gamma is the best decision I’ve made here, and I could not be more grateful for this home.
