Long distance relationships are either seen as promising relationships or disatorours. Social media and movies have portrayed only the hardships of long distance relationships and the psychological tool it can take. During this pandemic, many relationships have had to deal with long distance. This was due to college students being home, people being forced to move, travel bans and more. While every relationship is different, here are some things to consider before getting into a long distance relationship.

One of the most important things is making time for your significant other. Especially being in a long distance relationship, you are spending limited time with that person. It’s important to set aside time to speak with them on the phone or via facetime. By setting aside time you are showing your significant other that you value them and that you find their time valuable as well.

Another thing to do is openly communicate! Context and tone can get misconstrued through text messages so be open with your emotions. Yes, emoji’s can help get your point across but, it still leaves room for error.

Next, just because you aren’t doesn’t mean you still can’t do activities together! Websites and apps such as Netflix Party, allow you and your significant other to watch your favorite shows and movies with your partner.

Another important thing to remember is you aren’t the first person to do this. There are plenty of resources, articles and people you can reach out to if you want to speak about your concerns in a long distance relationship.

Finally, respect the reason that you are in a long distance relationship. Whether it’s school, work or something else, do not make your partner feel guilty for not being with you. Respect is one of the fundamentals of any relationship so make sure that no matter where your partner is, to respect them.
