Wednesday, November 4, 2015, Mr. and Miss Sophomore, along with the community service committee invited students to partake in a Socratic seminar about STD awareness in the student center lounge.

What better way to break the ice than to have students participate in fun interactive and informative activities? Upon arrival, participants were given an index card in which entered them in an exciting game. They were then given the opportunity to mingle with others and speak on the information found on their index card. Following the ice breaker, members of the community service committee presented facts and vital information about STDs as well as STIs.

Miss Sophomore, Pearis Bellamy, a psychology major from New Jersey, spoke on how she wanted to take the approach of interaction and discussion to tackle this subject. She felt the STD event was a fun and interactive way to speak on a sometimes-taboo subject. She says “It was quite refreshing to see so many sophomores and freshmen who were both excited as well as interested in becoming more aware about how to protect themselves.

The committee then split the crowd off into groups, they were given the task of creating a song, rap, poem, or skit about each of the subjects discussed previously. Topics such as: abstinence, herpes, gonorrhea, and HIV/AIDS prevention were discussed and presented in a creative way.

All in all, the event highlighted the importance of protection against STDs. Though college students have taken a plethora of health courses, the event was created to target an issue that is common on college campuses and sometimes overlooked. Stay on the look out for more events from both Mr.& Miss Sophomore, and the community service committee.
