Should Girls Put As Much Effort In Valentine’s Day As Guys Do?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

As January comes to an end and February begins its takeover, it is not a secret what the next most anticipated holiday is. Valentine’s Day is a time where girls are either filled with joy or filled with envy because it’s just another reminder that they don’t have a special someone in their lives. It is also a time when a lot of pressure is put on guys.

It is a known fact that most males put a lot of thought, time, and effort into what they want to give their valentine and how they are going to execute it, but do females do the same? This brings a very thought provoking question as the countdown to Valentine’s Day begins: Should girls put as much effort into Valentine’s Day as guys?

Teddy bears, roses, diamonds, hotel rooms, and expensive dinners, girls’ expectations during Valentine’s Day are always high and extravagent in comparison to a boy’s expectation. In any relationship fairness is always an important factor but does that always include holidays? Tiara Jenifer, a junior from Baltimore, Maryland, believes that it should be equal but it never will be, “I feel like it should be equal. If I expect a lot then I should always give a lot but the holiday is so one-sided that the girl is going to expect a lot more regardless.”

Even though the holiday is looked at as one-sided, you rarely hear males complain about the effort that they have to use in order to please their companion. Seth Martin, a junior from Little Rock, Arkansas, feels as though the romantic holiday is more about the relationship itself and that’s why females should be catered to, “Girls should put effort into the day, however; the day is more favored to females. It’s about the overall relationship but the man should always go the extra mile to make sure the day is special.”

No matter who puts the most effort into the holiday, always remember the goal is to please your special someone. Think hard and get to planning!
