Five Important Things Guys Love When Dating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

It’s His Campus week! A time where we at Her Campus Hampton U highlight the boys and men in our lives, while also offering a perspective that helps improve relationships between the world and men. When dating someone new, many of us hear more of the woman’s point of view and just assume what a guy wants. Well in this article, I’ll be highlighting five things guys love when dating or looking to date a woman.

This past week, I asked some of my male friends and supporters, “What are five things you love to have when dating someone new?” Some said that drip is important, and others mentioned music taste, but the majority of the responses were the same. Not only did their responses put a little smile on my face, but they also made me even more excited to share with you all.

First up, almost all of my male friends said that communication is important and I have to agree! In any relationship, no matter your partner or friend, or family member, the ability to communicate what makes you happy or uncomfortable is important.

As a subpoint to communication, self-expression is another characteristic guys love to see (and again, I agree 100%). Showing your individuality is important, no matter where you go and who you meet. Personally, I like to remind myself that no matter what, nobody can be a better me than myself.

The second most popular response was the importance of building a bond with a woman. A romantic relationship isn’t solely built on attraction but rather, on a strong connection between people. Now some might ask, “What type of connection, Eden?” While connections may be different, the guys included their own examples of a strong bond between their partners.

And I have to say, a tear or two may have fallen from my eye. Justin M. said, “Having a best friend and someone to confide in” was important because, for him, a relationship is supposed to be a safe haven. Jaden J. listed different activities that would make his bond with a woman stronger, such as, “making playlists together and laughing together.”

Alright, let me get myself together (lol)! For the third characteristic, my friends wanted to emphasize the importance of being respectful. Not only to yourself and to your partner but also to those who interact with you throughout the day. This honestly reminds me of the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. I think I’ve said enough since respect should be important to everyone!

Coming in at #4, the guys expressed that having a passion or a plan for your future is key in a relationship. No matter where the relationship goes, knowing yourself, your worth, and your plans for life is both attractive and makes you stand out to guys. Honestly, from a woman’s perspective, I have to agree! Knowing what direction you want to take your life in tells me you are mature, you are ready for the world, and you won’t stop until you’ve accomplished your goals. And that, ladies, gentlemen, and the non-binary, is what makes you incredible to anyone.

For our final most popular response, the guys love to see someone who has love for themselves. And when I asked them to clarify, they all said, “someone who carries themselves like the queen they already are.” And that was my favorite response overall. Dressing the way you love, expressing yourself through your opinions and music, and knowing that the love you have for yourself pours out onto others.

I want to give a huge thank you to my friends; Mali M. Ryan J., Justin M., Josh G., and Jaden J. for contributing to the creation of this article. Thank you for letting me amplify your voices for His Campus week!
