Cold Weather TLC for Down There

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

As the weather is getting colder, the sweaters are coming out, the leaves are changing, and pumpkin spice season is among us. Fall brings so many beautiful changes, however the weather can have an affect on your body – specifically your vagina. The transition from hot summer days to the cooler fall days we’re getting into now not only affects your hair, skin, and nails but your vag as well. Here are some things to keep in mind this season to keep the vag in tip top shape!

Invest in some cotton undies.

While this weather is great because it reduces the number of yeast infections you can get from wearing wet bathing suits, no panties, etc., it  increases your risk of getting a yeast infection from wearing leggings, jeggings, and other tight pants. These pants accompanied by thongs,  nylon, or satin panties can trap bacteria, allow for bacteria to be passed from back to front, and leave no room for your vajay to breathe. I know  7/$27 from Victoria’s Secret sounds great and that they have cute panties, but try to get ones that are 100% Cotton or that at least have a cotton  lining on the part that’ll be on your vagina.

Avoid strong seasonal scents

Yes, we all love the surplus of seasonal scents that fill the shelves of Bath and Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, and Target. Scents ranging from Pumpkin Spice to Apple Cider and everything in between. While it may sound exciting to smell like fall personified, you should think twice before cleaning your body with these scents. Scents like these have tons of chemicals in them that can throw off your pH, especially if you’re thinking about taking a bath with them. Stick to the soaps and body washes that you usually do, you can always buy some perfume if it’s absolutely necessary for you to smell like the season.

Antibiotics and your vagina aren’t friends.

This season is well known for the increased number of colds and flus, which means your doctor will be prescribing you several antibiotics to combat your illness. Unfortunately, certain antibiotics can also destroy your vagina’s natural flora, which means that you may be feeling better about your cold, but your vagina will be more prone to yeast infections. After taking your medicine, be sure to take probiotic gummy vitamins, or eat unsweetened yogurt to help get back some of the good bacteria that was destroyed while you were on your medication.

Cold, dry weather doesn’t mean a dry vagina

While this weather is notorious for drying out your skin, lips, hair, nails – basically everything on your body, it doesn’t affect the moisture of your vag. Since your woohoo is its own self-cleaning oven/ ecosystem, the weather won’t make it dry like everything else. If you are experiencing dryness, be sure to visit your doctor to see what’s up.

Go commando overnight

Ditch those panties that you’ve worn all day, and forget putting on a pair after you take your nightly shower. Since you won’t be sweating while you sleep, night time is a great chance to let your vag breathe and air out, especially if its been trapped in a pair of leggings or in a bodysuit all day. Sleep in loose fitting pants or shorts, wash up in the morning, and follow up with a fresh pair of cotton undies to keep your vagina and pH happy.

The fall is great for so many things and seeing as how it’s the season of change, we have to adjust to the way it changes our bodies as well. As you alter your hair care and skin regimens to suit the weather, don’t forget these tips and to change your vaginal care regimens as well!
