Holi: A Festival of Colors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamilton chapter.

On May 4th, a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Holi came to Hamilton! Want to know more about the history of this colorful festival? Read on!

Holi is a festival of colors in honor of the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This festival originated in the Hindu religion, but it has become a popular celebration in many other communities. The ancient origin of Holi celebrated the triumph of good over bad. The festival was meant to bring society together and renew relationships. Holi is widely celebrated in parts of the Indian subcontinent, mainly in India and Nepal. Thousands of Hindus participate in the festival of Holi in this part of the world every year. Originally, it commemorated good harvests and the fertile land. Now, the festival has taken on a more general significance of simply welcoming in springtime. Participants hold bonfires, throw colored powder at each other, and celebrate wildly. In recent years, Holi and Holi-inspired festivals and events have been spreading throughout the United States. Holi has been brought to a number of college campuses across the country and other events, such as The Color Run were inspired by the colors and festive-nature of Holi. What a perfect way to celebrate the coming of spring that we have all waited so long for!
