Emily Pitman ’15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamilton chapter.

You can most likely find this campus celeb killing it on the rugby field. Off the field, she’s giving back to the Hamilton community by creating amazing events such as the Color Run. Meet this week’s Campus Celebrity, Emily Pitman!

Name: Emily Pitman (although most of the campus knows me as “Pitty”)
Class: 2015
Major:Geoscience
Minor: Public Policy

What activities are you involved in on campus?
I am the president of the women’s rugby team, a leader for both Adirondack Adventure and Alternative Spring Break, a sister of Gamma Xi, and a tour guide.

The color run was such an amazing success! Who or what inspired you to create this event?
I’ve seen various color runs advertised near my hometown and at other colleges, but have never had the opportunity to be a part of one. What better way to make sure that other Hamilton Students could enjoy a Color Run than to throw one on campus?

What was the organization process like for hosting such a big event?
A lot of planning went into making this event happen! Initial planning started at the end of August with communication with various Hamilton administrators to ensure that the event could happen on campus. The majority of our success was due to outstanding support from the campus and local businesses – Bon Appetit, Campus Safety, Student Activites, the Athletic Department all were willing to go leaps and bounds to help us make this happen. The powder was purchased from an online vendor through funding from Student Activities and the shirts were created by Holy Shirt in Syracuse.

A portion of the proceeds went to benefit the Special Olympics in Rome. Why did you and the Rugby team pick this particular organization?
The rugby team selected Special Olympics because we wanted a charity that promotes athletics in youth – the same concept behind Color Runs!

Are you planning on hosting a second Color Run for next year?
We had a fantastic turn out this year and we are definitely looking forward to hosting another run next year! We look forward to having even more people and more powder next year!

What do you like most about Rugby/being on the Rugby team?
The rugby team has not only given me an athletic outlet, but has also introduced me to my closest friends on campus. Both the men and women’s teams are a constant source of encouragement, sportsmanship, acceptance, and fun – being around my teammates, both on and off the field, is always the highlight of my day.
