Spring at GW: Sunshine and…Food Trucks!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

Frisbee on the mall at 2, come soak up the rays. My friend sent me this text last Thursday when the DC forecast read 70 degrees and sunny. Friday reached an “Are we in Florida?” high of 76! And yet, today-only four days later- it is 37 degrees and the sidewalks of GW are lined with snow. Mother Nature, what are you doing?!
For those of you in the class of 2014, last week was a beautifully accurate preview of what GW is like in the spring. Getting your tan on in Kogan Plaza, playing Frisbee in U Yard, having a picnic in between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial- springtime in DC is exquisite. Sporting colorful outfits and big smiles, students finally come out from months of hibernation to bask in the long-awaited DC sun. Along with cheerful peers and fun outdoor events, DC’s food trucks are also bound to lift your mood (and appetite!)
The following will provide you with a taste of which food trucks you can expect to see around Foggy Bottom come sunshine time!
• The Big Cheese- This truck has partnered with DC’s mouth-watering cheese shop, Cowgirl Creamery, to offer pedestrians with a choice of six delectable grilled cheeses. Gouda with caramelized onions, swiss with sautéed mushrooms, brie with apple and honey, and goat with tomato and tarragon are amongst the crazy-good items that lure customers towards the BC!
• Capmac- Everyone loves a soul-warming mac’n’cheese and it seems as though Capmac has mastered the art. Mac’n’cheese, chicken parm, and beef Bolognese are the most popular purchases made from this bright orange truck.
• Dangerous Pies- If you’ve seen this black bad boy outside of Phillips than you may have shied away from fear that the truck was home to an inmate or two. Fortunately, all that exists inside of Dangerous Pies are a few friendly pie makers and their heavenly aroma-producing ovens. Head over to this truck for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert if you’re in the mood for a tasty pie or quiche, sweet or savory.
• Red Hook Lobster Pound- If you are from New England then this inviting truck will surely provide you with a bit of nostalgia. Constantly surrounded by a curving line of customers, Red Hook dishes out delectable lobster and shrimp rolls. Lobster rolls can be served in mayo (Maine-style) or drizzled with butter (Connecticut-style).
• Sauca- Featured above, Sauca is a mean-green-international-machine! From Mexicali fish tacos to Pork Bahn Mi, Sauca will surely satisfy your ethnic cuisine cravings.
• Sweetflow Mobile- You may have been to their location in Dupont or Georgetown, but Sweetgreen is the place to go for a quick fresh salad (I personally prefer Sweetgreen over Chopt!) or froyo. Their green truck is hard to miss and is often parked on campus during the warmer months!
• Other trucks to look out for: Curbside Cupcake, District of Pi (Pizza), El Floridano (sandwiches and soups), Meathead Mobile Eatery (sandwiches), and Takorean (Korean bbq and taco fusion).
