How to Keep Developing Professionally in Quarantine

Map out your career path

Now is a great time to think about why you’re studying what you are and what career goals you have for yourself. You don’t need to have every step of the way planned but having an overview of potential places you want to end up will make things much clearer for you. It is important to define your career goals and what you are doing to achieve them because your experiences in college are crucial towards that. It will also help you identify where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and what more you need to do to get where you want to be.

Update your LinkedIn/personal website

If you’ve been putting off filling out your LinkedIn or creating your personal website, now is a great time to do so! Everyone needs a complete LinkedIn profile, so go the extra mile to make sure your accomplishments and skills are included too. Many career paths, mostly creative, require a personal portfolio these days. Having your personal brand put together looks good to job recruiters and gives people an overview of who you are, outside of your professional identity.

Apply to remote internships

Because of the uncertainty surrounding this pandemic, you still want to be able to build your resume while stuck in the house. Remote internships allow you to still get experience in your field that can help you later down the line. Sites, such as hirescholars.com and covintern.com have been created for college students to compile remote internships in several fields. You can also ask around in your network, and watch LinkedIn closely for any being posted.

Pick up a new skill

Learning new skills that relate to your career interests will look impressive on your resume and make you look ahead of most students your age. For example, marketing majors can learn social media automation or Adobe Photoshop. Many companies are providing online lessons for free, such as Skillshare and Brit+Co.
