15 Activities To Do Over College Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

Ahh, the time all college students have been waiting for is finally here! Finals are done and Fall semester has finally come to a close. Many are headed back home for the holidays and the well-anticipated winter break! Make sure to take advantage of this break from school by relaxing, but still being productive. Here are 15 tips to help you make the most of your winter break.

1. Sleep.

No more 8 a.ms, no more 10 a.m. meetings. Sleep in and enjoy it because the early mornings will soon start back up again.

2. Read a book.

Nothing is more relaxing and rewarding that cuddling up with a good book of choice. Head on over the the library or bookstore and choose one to dig into over break.

3. Make some money.

Even if your break is only two weeks long, there are still opportunities to make some money. Ask for some hours at your summer job, or ask families if they need a babysitter for a night.

4. Binge watch some Netflix.

Although we all do this at school anyway, we don’t have any homework to worry about over break. We can watch Netflix all day long if we want to and not feel bad about it.

5. Workout.

Hit up the local gym and get a good workout in. I guarantee it will make you feel 10x better and more productive–especially after those good ol’ holiday meals!

6. Catch up with old friends.

Send a text to your old friends in high school and ask them if they want to catch up over a cup of coffee or maybe hit up the local mall.

7. Bake.

Baking is both relaxing and rewarding, since you get to enjoy a delicious treat at the end.

8. Give your room a makeover.

Sometimes it’s fun to redo your room at home (if you still have one). You can either go all out and paint the walls, or you can just move around the furniture and get rid of stuff you no longer need.

9. Search for summer internships.

During the semester it is hard to find free time to search for those summer internships. Take advantage of your weeks off and get that search on!

10. Go ice skating.

There are so many great places to go ice skating. Grab some friends and some skates and don’t forget to take some cute photos!

11. Spend time with family.

Try to spend some time at home to catch up with your family. Have a family game or movie night. For many, coming home for the holidays is always a highlight because they get to spend time with their loving fam.

12. Check out Christmas lights.

As we get older, we tend to forget about how fun looking at the Christmas lights around town can be. Hop in a car with some friends or maybe rent a party bus, play some holiday music and get festive!

13. Apply for scholarships.

Just like searching for internships, it’s hard to find the time during the semester to find and apply for scholarships. Take advantage of your time off and start applying!

14. Volunteer.

There are most likely so many volunteering events around your home. Why not spend some of your free time giving back to the community?

15. Wait for college to start back up again.

Almost every college student impatiently waits for the semester to end so they can rush home. However, a lot of the time, once you are home for just a few days you already want to go back to school, due to the pestering of your parents or siblings or missing your best friends.
