Sunday’s Game: Puppy Bowl XIII

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

Did you tune into the game on Sunday? Two teams going head to head in a battle for an oh-so coveted victory. It was intense, it was unpredictable, it was down right adorable.

Yes, that’s right folks, sunday afternoon, screens all over America displayed the one game everyone *should* care about: Puppy Bowl XIII.

For those of you that live under a rock, the Puppy Bowl is a yearly Animal Planet special on Super Bowl Sunday that pits two teams of pups looking for homes against each other on the field: Team Ruff and Team Fluff.

Aside from the pure entertainment that is watching a bunch of puppies running around with toys as the announcer ticks off ridiculous puppy puns, the special aims to find homes for all of these pups–and how could it not be successful? Who wouldn’t want a famous football-playing member of their family?

The Puppy Bowl Pregame Show, or “tail-gating” as Animal Planet likes to call it, premiered an hour before the show and included such famous sports correspondents as Rodt Weiler. Prior to kick off, an appearance was made by none other than Punxsutawney Phil.

Continuing his 6 year streak, Dan Schachner acted as “Rufferee” (who wouldn’t want that job?).

The teams this year were made up of 78 pups looking for forever homes from 34 different shelters across 22 states.

This Sunday, viewers saw something would never have expected; Team Fluff emerged victorious over Team Ruff with a final score of 93-38, both setting a new record for Puppy Bowl scoring and ending their couple-year losing streak.

And who could forget that memorable halftime performance by The Rock Cats?

MVP (Most valuable Puppy) was awarded to Team Fluff’s Rory, a seventeen week old poodle mix.

The coveted Lombarki Trophy was awarded to Team Fluff’s Nikita; a Cocker spaniel-bichon frise mix.

If you missed out on the action, be sure to tune in next year. This is the one sports event that everyone can watch!
