Her Story: I Have Been Shamed For My Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

As a writer for Her Campus, you all can probably guess that I am an English major here at Gettysburg College.  As a student in college, you also probably get the same question I do almost every day: what is your major?  Following this question, depending on your answer, there is a wide range of reactions.  Here are a couple of examples:

  1. Science: Oh good for you!! Do you want to become a doctor?

  2. Business: Oh that will be so useful for when you are out of college!  You can apply that to anything!

  3. Economics: Oh you are going to make so much money!

As you can probably already guess, these are not the reactions I receive. Most of the time the reaction is negative.  Some of them include:

  1. What are you going to do with that?

  2. So you just want to be a teacher?

  3. It is so hard/impossible to be a writer.

  4. Why didn’t you want to be a business major?

And now my personal favorite…

     5. Oh so you are planning on becoming a housewife/marrying rich?

Never a Good for you!

Thankfully, my parents have supported me with my decision and my friends are supportive, but sometimes I freak out and listen to the negative responses.  Using Her Campus to get my voice out through writing has been a great outlet and I have proven to myself that I can pursue writing once I’ve graduated from college.

No matter what major a student has, college is tiring and hard work, so next time someone says their major think about how tough school can be for everyone. Whatever their major is, it must be something they love and that is truly what matters!

I would just like to say: I do not plan on marrying rich or becoming a housewife, but instead working hard to get a job and earning an income for myself, doing what I love.

I am currently a senior at Gettysburg College!  I am an English major with a Wrting concentration and Women Gender Studies minor.
