5 Steps to Getting Ready for Family Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

It’s the weekend that most students look forward to: Family Weekend.  After not seeing your family for almost two months, it’s an exciting thing to know that your family is coming to see you.  However, before you can enjoy your family time, there are a few things that need to be done to get ready.

1. When writing down everything on the calendar for October, you put down that date that your family will arrive.  At this point you think that there is still a bunch of time before your family arrives, so you don’t have to do anything else yet.

2.  A few weeks before Family Weekend, your parents call you and ask you to make a list of everything you forgot at home, and anything else you may need.  You put it off for a bit, until you get another phone call saying that if you want them to bring you anything from your room, you need to tell them now.  You finally sit down and think about those shoes you forgot and all of the snacks you want them to bring you.

3.  A couple days before you start thinking about everything you are going to do with them.  I mean, suddenly you have to entertain your parents for a whole weekend (And something tells you that the normal college weekend activities such as sleeping are not going to cut it)!  You look through the schedule of events, and finally just say, “Oh whatever, we can figure out as we go along.”  The only exact plans made are that your parents are taking you out to a meal that doesn’t come from Servo (because as much as you may love it, you are ready for something a little different!).

4. A couple hours before your family arrives, you look around your room thinking, “Oh, wow, this is kinda a mess. I want my parents to think that I am being an adult and that my room is always clean!”  You and your roommate take out the trash, vacuum like you have never vacuumed before, and put all of the dirty clothes away.  When you are finally down a few minutes before your family is due to arrive you look around and realize, “This place is so clean, that there is no way they will ever believe that it always looks like this!”

5.  Your family finally arrives, and as you hug them hello you realize that none of these preparations were all that important.  The only thing that matters is that they are finally here to see you, and you can finally share your new home and friends with them!

Enjoy your Family Weekend everyone!!!
