The Unfortunate Thing About Growth

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

Contrary to popular belief, growth is not inevitable.  Change is, but not growth. You have to make the decision to grow and in making that decision you are acknowledging the fact that it will not be easy or comfortable. You guessed it, that’s the unfortunate thing about growth: growth and comfort cannot coexist.

In order to grow, changes need to be made. Those changes may be a change in scenery, a change in the people around you, a change in the way you approach things, etc. Many people fear growth because of all the changes it requires but you can’t expect to stay stuck in the same place and be succesful in a world that’s always changing.

Growth is going to lead you to let go of people you thought would be around forever, leave places you thought would always be “home”, and even pursue a career completely different than what you went to school for. It’s going to require that you rely on your instincts and take chances.

When my “road to growth” began, I had to make the decision to choose myself and choose what would be best  instead of looking out for everyone else and cleaning up their messes (which I was NOTORIOUS for lol). I had to stop worrying about what everyone else had going on and use some of that energy to worry about myself. I’m stubborn, so of course I tried to hold on to things and people weren’t meant to be around long-term. But things have a way of working out the way that they need to, and athough I tried to hold on, the universe had different plans. I had to change the way I handled certain things, I had to become more patient and I finally had to accept the fact that I can’t hold everyone to the same standard I hold myself.

The changes I had to make were difficult at the time because I was comfortable where I was, it worked for me. It didn’t cause me any trouble that I couldn’t handle. But I also wasn’t progressing at the rate I could have been either. Dragging your feet to make the necessary changes for your growth will only set you back. It’s always better to rip off the bandage (which, of course, is easier said than done).

Growth is a commitment, but the results are so worth it. You’ll be much happier with where you are in life.

All you have to do is choose you.
