Student Org Spotlight: International Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

International Club is one of the many organizations that Georgia Southern has to offer to its students. The International Club is about bringing the international student who come to Georgia Southern and the American students together to learn about each other’s culture. The way the club brings them together is by hosting a lot of events where they have to interact with each other. Some of their activities consist of soccer matches, going camping, having dinner together, going to the clubhouse, and having social gatherings. For example, the international students learn about American slang while the American students learn how to say certain things such as hello and bye in a different language.

At these events, the students get to know each other and learn some phrases or the meaning of something. It also gives the American student who wants to study abroad the opportunity to ask the international students questions about their home country. Jacquaya McKenzie, President of International Club, is going to study abroad in Japan and through the club she met Miharu an exchange student from Japan. By meeting Miharu, Jacquaya was able to learn new things that the study abroad advisor did not mention. Other American students were able to learn more about the places they wanted to travel to or get help with learning a new language.

International Club provides many opportunities to experience the many cultures of the world at Georgia Southern. For example, at the social gatherings they would listen to foreign music, learn a dance from a certain country, eat foods made by the international students, and watch foreign movies. By having a mixture of American culture and foreign culture it helps the international students to feel more at home while educating everyone else. Not only does it help the American student to learn but also the other international students. In the club there are/were members from Nigeria, Colombia, Mexico, China, Morocco, England, Denmark, India, Korea, Japan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Vietnam, Cuba, and Brazil. Though not only do you learn about these places, but you make long lasting friendship with the members.
