Reading is BETTER than Partying: Let Me Explain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

I’m not your normal teenage girl.

 I’ll admit it!

I don’t go to parties that involve drinking, dancing, and smoking.

I prefer to stay home.

I came upon this realization when I was a senior in high school.

I was invited to a graduation party.

I turned down the invitation and

stayed home with a book in my hand.

The thought of drinking, dancing and smoking simply

Don’t excite me.

I’d rather explore the words on a page taking me

To places I’ve never been before.

It might just be me, but the books are addictive.

I crave the stories hidden beneath the

Covers of the book.

With every book, the craving increases.

Red cups lead to red cops which lead

To time behind bars.

I’d rather read about someone in jail than

Experience being locked up behind bars.

I’m all about the aesthetic of life.

Books, in moderation, contains some magical spell that can cause people

To riot, cry, dance, and etc.

Books don’t discriminate.

Anyone can read a book and feel comfortable.

You don’t have to be this race or that body shape or

That social class

To indulge in a book the same way as everyone else.

Racism and bigotry are rarely found in the right books

And if they are present then they are there to inform you.

Books don’t see color.

Books are accepting of diversity.

You and all your friends might only wear orange jackets.

Actually, every friend of yours wear an orange jacket.

If you arrive to a party wearing a red jacket and see everyone else wearing an orange jacket, will you feel welcomed?

People might say that they accept every race and gender at a party, but does that black sheep truly feel accepted?

Unlike parties, books allow everyone to feel included.

Books only require one thing.

You can’t catch any hands for reading a book.

Trouble can follow you while you’re at a party whether

It’s the outfit you wear, the boy you dance with or

The amount of shots you take while on an empty stomach.

You never have to worry about the right outfit to wear while reading

A book.

You don’t have to put a full face of makeup on

While reading a book.

If you think books are boring than

You haven’t found the perfect book for yourself.

A book has more excitement than any amount of alcohol can provide

And the consequences that come with reading are far less serious.

I’m not trying to convince you to not party.

Have fun and live life,

But don’t make a big deal when that one friend declines your

Party invitation.

Don’t judge the people who find entertainment in books and not flashing lights, loud music, and clothes that are too tight. Don’t force that friend to

Come out of her shell and indulge in the things

That she will immediately regret.

Reading is WAY better than partying.
