Rainy Day Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

Sometimes you just need a really good cry.

You can cry to the rain, your favorite sad movie, those commercials with the dogs and cats in animal shelters, but nothing beats crying to a playlist meant for all of the tears.

Crying is good for you when it’s needed. Crying is one of the body’s primary natural responses to an overwhelming amount of stress.

Research shows that:

  • 85% of women and 73% of men felt less sad and angry after crying.

  • On average, women cry 47 times a year, men cry 7 times a year.

  • Crying bouts last 6 minutes on average.

  • Tears are more often shed between 7 and 10 p.m.

How Crying is Good for You

  1. It Relieves Stress Unalleviated stress can increase our risk for heart attack. Our ability to cry has survival value!!

  2. Crying Lowers Blood Pressure Crying has been found to lower blood pressure and pulse rate immediately following therapy sessions during which patients cried.

  3. Tears Remove Toxins Tears actually remove toxins from the body. They help remove chemicals that build up during emotional stress.

If you’re like me, maybe you cry a couple times each month. Maybe you cry every other month. Maybe you even cry a few times a year. Regardless, rainy days are the best times to have a really nice cathartic cry. Here are a few songs that will assist you:

  • Bruno Mars, It Will Rain
  • Demi Lovato, Skyscraper
  • Daniel Caesar, Loose
  • Daniel Caesar, Streetcar
  • The Weeknd, Till Dawn (Here Comes The Sun)
  • Lana del Rey, White Mustang
  • Sam Smith, Too Good At Goodbyes
  • Frank Ocean, Nikes
  • Hozier, In a Week
  • The Neighbourhood, Flawless
  • James Arthur, Say You Won’t Let Go
