Mixed from Head to Toe: Products and Tips for Mixed Chicks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

The world is becoming one big melting pot.  We all have something in us, some more than others.  Being mixed is pretty awesome but sometimes it can be a bother.  If you’re visibly mixed finding hair care products, makeup, and skincare products can be a challenge.  Through years of trial and error, one eventually will find what works for them.  If you don’t have that kind of time or have just given up here are some tips that may help.

If you have big, frizzy, curly hair and don’t feel like taming them with heat or chemicals these products can work wonders for curl hydration and form.

For the drier and more defined ringlets try:

Having dry curls can result in breakage and damage.  Remember that the tighter the ringlet the harder it is for natural oils to hydrate the hair.  But being mixed some products are too powerful and too greasy and cause itching, pore clogging, and do not hydrate the curls.  These products can also produce acne.

For looser ringlets try:

You can use these on tighter ringlets as well, but this is a really great product for curls that can take in natural oils a little easier.  These products are very light and also help to maintain curl form without being interrupted by humidity. (I use the orange jar because my ringlets are tighter and drier but I’ve heard great reviews on all of these products).

You may have heard about all of these different kinds of oils for hair: coconut, argan, olive, castor, jojoba, etc but which is best for mixed hair?

Coconut and castor are way to powerful for mixed hair and can make your hair very greasy and sticky.  Believe it or not raw store bought cooking olive oil can work wonders for your hair.  People in the Mediterranean have been using it for centuries.  Argon oil is also great, but you don’t need much. Jojoba oil is great for sealing curls and decreasing frizz.  If you haven’t already you should also invest in a diffuser and a wide toothed comb.  The diffuser helps reduce heat from a blow dryer and a wide-toothed comb helps detangle hair better.

For oily skin that is prone to blackheads:

Anything charcoal is pretty amazing for oily skin with blackheads.  It helps dry the skin in a way that doesn’t harm it or make it feel dry and irritated.  Garnier has great oily skin remedies for under $10.  If you have a little more cash to play with Biore is also great.  If you’re balling on a budget Elmer’s glue on a QTip spread over blackheads will also remove unwanted acne (although I don’t think doing that frequently is good for your face).

For makeup try:

Finding the right shade of makeup can be annoying for mixed race people.  I have to blend two shades and if you’re like me and you have fair, olive skin you know that store bought foundation does not have your shade.  For foundation and concealer, I personally go with MAC, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Dior or NARS.  In the winter, I blend two shades one fair and one medium and in the summer I blend a darker shade and the darker of my winter shades.  It’s very hard to determine shades in the summer because it really all depends on how dark you get.

If your eyes also happened to be mixed I recommend trying shades of eyeliner and shadows that are recommended for your color.  If you have green/hazel eyes like me try using eggplant eyeliners and gold and purple colored eye shadows it will make your eyes pop.  Store bought brands will work preferably I like Cover Girl, but I use Urban Decay, Dior, and Mark Jacobs.

Hopefully, these tips help you.  There are many different things you can use and these are just SOME of the things that have personally helped me.  Good luck ladies!
