Six Ways to Make V-day About Love and not Lovers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Any girl knows that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. We’ve seen the candy grams being sold in Lau and the themed candy, chocolate boxes, stuffed animals and paraphernalia in CVS. For the Georgetown couples, V-day means a nice dinner (likely at Café Milano) and then perhaps ice skating by the Potomac or seeing a movie. Adorable, we know. However, the single girls approach V-day from a different angle the three main ones being a.) proclaiming their excitement in being single and ready to mingle (these girls are pumped about V-day falling on a Thursday. They’re ready to live it up and drink it down), b.) complaining about being all alone (likely mentioning living alone with her 12 cats later in life)  or c.) rationalizing V-day as a commercial holiday created by Hallmark to sell cards and chocolates (usually just sounds like “Valentines Day is stupid!!) Well I’m here to tell you that you don’t need a valentine to enjoy V-day. Here are some other options for Valentine’s Day plans:

  1. Have a girls’ night.

Make a plan to go out to dinner with your best girl friends. No valentines, no problem! Spend time with the people you love, that love you. It can be refreshing to forget about guys, stop feeling sorry for yourself that you don’t have a boyfriend, and enjoy your true friends. And by all means, get dolled up and look your hottest for no one but yourself!

  1. Buy a giant chocolate sampler heart… for yourself.

Yes, for yourself. Invite your friends over and share it! You can be like Channing Tatum in The Vow, taking turns trying the chocolates. Laugh about the ones you like and spit out the ones you hate. No cheating and no feeling guilty for eating a box of chocolates! What is the point of life if you can’t eat exorbitant amounts of chocolate every once in a while?!

Dove always knows best:

  1. Hand out valentines!

But seriously, who said delivering valentines had to stop after the fifth grade when you no longer made valentine mailboxes?? It definitely did not stop for me. This year I may have gone a little overboard… meaning I spent $30 online shopping for V-day paraphernalia. But, it doesn’t matter if you spend any money at all! You can cut out hearts from construction paper and write cute messages on them! I am beyond excited to hand out all my valentines. It is not hard and doesn’t take long, but you get to let all the people you love know that you appreciate them on V-day. Plus, who does not like candy?! (meaning your valentines should probably come with candy)

This girl does it right:

  1. Find a single friend and go on a date!

Guy or a girl, it does not matter. It might be funnier to go with a girl and get looks from people. Hey, let the people-watchers think whatever they want! Why wouldn’t you deserve a nice dinner and dessert on V-day?? Oh right, you do. Turn it into a game. Play what’s-their-story about the couples around you. What do they do? How long have they been dating? How’s their relationship going? Think Steve Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night…

  1. Karaoke. Yup, I said it …

Go to a karaoke bar with your friends and take turns singing songs about love. (Think Pitch Perfect but with less talent… Aca-believe it!) If you don’t have a love interest right now, you can sing about it with the girls you love! And ideally, make fools out of yourselves while doing it.

  1. Splurge on yourself!

You don’t have to spend money buying chocolate and gifts for someone else so why don’t you take that money and spend it on yourself? Maybe, buy yourself flowers? Or better yet, go get a massage or a blowout to make you feel relaxed and beautiful! You can never go wrong with retail therapy either! If you’re into puns like I am, treat yourself to an “I don’t need a man-icure.” You can never adequately love someone else unless your love for yourself comes first! So please, never forget to love yourself!

At the end of the day, no matter what you do on Thursday it’s just another day of the week. And if you’re lucky, you get to spend it by letting your loved ones know you care.

Make sure to call your parents and tell them you love them. Parents never get tired of hearing that.

And if all else fails, just picture Channing saying THIS to you!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all you beautiful people!
