The Short List: Shoe Solutions for Tall Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Let’s face it: the grass really is always greener on the other side.  I’m a tall girl, and while I’m happy with my height, I often find myself fretting when I am deciding what shoes to wear to a nice event.  I love heels but I also don’t love towering over my friends and (unfortunately but often inevitably) over boys.  So what does a tall girl have to do so she doesn’t feel like a giraffe?  Here are some fun options that extend beyond your trusty ballet-flat.  To my tall girls out there: heads up!

Option 1: TOMS

Toms have been trending for a while and though you might be afraid of jumping into a dying fad, fear not because Toms are here to stay.  You can opt for the basic style in plenty of different colors, patterns, and textures.  There are basic colored prints that are great with jeans and skirts, but also glittered shoes that can dress up an outfit for a night out or silky grosgrain styles that can add a feminine touch to your outfit.  Toms offer a lot of cute and comfortable options without any added height.

Option 2: Gladiator Sandals

Better get these out soon, because winter is on its way.  While it’s still (sort of) warm, though, try out a pair of lacey gladiators (toga sold separately)!  These sandals can extend up to your knee, calve, or ankle: you choose how far.  Their flat sole is perfect if you’re looking for an attention-grabbing shoe with little or no heel; you can find them in studded, metallic, or leather styles.  The one caveat to these Roman-style shoes is maintaining your pedicure while your toes are exposed!

Option 3: Topsiders

Ok, so maybe it isn’t boating season anymore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still break out your Sperry’s, especially since boat shoes now come in plaid, leopard print, corduroy, and sequined varieties.  More of a traditionalist?  You can’t go wrong with a classic brown leather pair that will function well in a business or social environment.  Don’t forget—Sperry’s are waterproof, so no need to worry about that drink someone just dropped on your shoe.  Channel your inner preppiness (it’s in there somewhere) and embrace Sperry Top-Siders, even if it’s the closest you’ll ever get to a boat.

Option 4: Boots

This one’s a no-brainer.  Every girl should have a good pair of boots.  What I mean by that is a pair that can transition from day to night and can be worn with jeans, leggings, or tights and a skirt or dress.  If you’re more of a Western girl, maybe search for some low-heeled cowboy boots.  If you like your preppy style, riding boots are a staple. Try heading to the nearby Frye Boot Company on Wisconsin Avenue or Steve Madden on M Street. Though boots can seem expensive, if you get the right pair, you’ve invested in a multifunctional (and fashionable) shoe that will take you through the fall, winter, and early spring.

Option 5: Mary Janes

This innocent schoolgirl shoe is no longer just for hopscotch on the playground.  Different brands have been putting a modern spin on the classic, adding an extra touch to flats with a feminine strap and buckle that comes across either the foot or ankle like a ballet slipper.  Some styles come with a heel but there are plenty of cute options that remain true to the flat sole.  Another bonus to these is that they can be worn either with bare feet or with tights as the weather gets colder.  Retailers from J.Crew to Urban Outfitters offer their own take on the Mary Jane, so if you’re looking for an update from your basic ballet flat, try out this vintage favorite.
