Halloween Makeup: One Simple Look, Many Different Ways

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Halloween is always a fun time to bust out a new look and try out makeup you’ve been too afraid to do before. Bright colors, fake lashes, and gems can be tacky, but in a costume, and when applied correctly, can be done tastefully. Before you add all these extra touches to your makeup it’s best to start with one basic look that you can build off of.

Products you’ll need:
Primer (a base that makes eyeshadows brighter, last longer and less crease-prone)
a lid color: ivory/nude/champagne (Urban Decay Sin, MAC Shroom, Maybelline)
a crease color: light gray (MAC Print)
mascara
black eyeliner
face products
extra makeup: glitter, diamonds, colorful eyeshadows/lipstick

Begin by applying the primer all over your eyelid and along your lower lashline. Make sure to apply more if you plan on using more eyeshadow.

Using an eyeshadow brush, apply the lid color all over the lid and into the inner corner (tearduct area). Next take your gray shade and apply it in the crease. The crease is the area above your lid where your eye socket is located. The best brush for this is a crease brush, but if you don’t have one use your ring finger/favorite eyeshadow brush to blend it in.

Lightly line your upper lashline with eyeliner, applying close to the roots so your lashes have the illusion that they’re thicker. Finish off with mascara and your basic eye look is done.

From here you can build on to this look however you want depending on your costume!
For something whimsical: fairies, mermaids, angels: Apply a pastel tone onto your lid, blending into the original lid color. Pat a tiny bit of glitter onto your lid color and blend carefully. Add a light color on your lower lashline such as a purple, blue, or light green to soften up the look. Use some of the remaining glitter and pat on your cheekbones and finish off with a soft, pink lip.

For something “dangerous”: rocker, biker, devil, vampire: Add some extra gray into your crease and smudge more of the black liner onto your upper lashline. Line your waterline, which is right above your lower lashline, with black eyeliner. Smudge some of the gray eyeshadow on your lower lashline, but make sure to avoid the whole raccoon look! For a rocker/biker keep your lips natural or nude, for a devil go with red lips and for a vampire try a berry or a dark nude lip.

For something classic: cat, superhero, etc.: Use your black eyeliner to trace your upper lashline and flick out at the end into a cat eye. This can sometimes be hard to do, so try to balance your arm, look down into a mirror and maybe watch a YouTube tutorial before. If you’re up to it, draw some leopard spots onto the outer corner of your eye to amp up the feline effect (if you’re being a cat)! Apply some of the lid color eyeshadow onto your lower lashline to brighten your whole eye up. Finish off with a lipstick that will match your costume: superhero = glossy cherry red, cat = bubblegum pink
