Coming from a hopeless romantic who reads copious amounts of fanfiction and YA romance, I know just about every Valentine’s trope known to man. I also know it can seem frustrating when you don’t have a date for the day of romance, especially when you want someone to share those couple’s activities with, like an exchange of flowers or just cuddling on the couch.

But trust me, it’s also a great chance to take the day for yourself! This coming from someone who, in addition to being a hopeless romantic, is 19 years single.

I think Valentine’s Day, being the day of love, extends to self-love. Taking this time to really pamper yourself can be a real treat! Here’s what I’ll be doing this year:

First, I have to go to classes. I suggest if you have them, you go to them; you don’t want to accidentally miss something important that’s going to be on the next test!

Once those are done, I’ll be spending some time taking myself on a date, hanging out at either the local bakery (love you, Sweet Arts!) or the library nearby. No matter where I’ll be, I’ll be reading some adorable fanfiction. Valentine’s-themed fics are some of the cutest, in my opinion, especially the ones filled with confessions of love or group shenanigans!

I’ll also be taking the time to remind myself of how all kinds of love are important. Familial, self and platonic love are just as, if not more, important than romantic love, and I think on a day like Valentine’s Day, as much as I love it, that bears reminding. Romance is not the be-all, end-all of life.

I’ll be rounding out the day spending time with friends and eating the chocolates I’ve saved up. Nothing better to end the day, am I right?

Do what makes you happy this Valentine’s Day, whether it’s on your own, with friends or with a loved one. Trust me, it’s the best way to spend the day!
