How to Survive a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Geneseo chapter.

Anyone in a long distance relationship knows how hard it can be to be apart from their significant other. During breaks, I am separated from my girlfriend anywhere from a week to over a month! Luckily, my experience can make yours easier. Here are some of my tips for making long distance relationships easier!

Text updates

One of the hardest things about being in a long distance relationship is feeling like you’re missing parts of your significant other’s life. Feeling left out of the loop makes you feel more distant! It’s easy to combat this issue by sending intermittent text updates whenever something fun or interesting happens. I’m not saying to text every single second of the day, but just keep each other updated!

Video chat

We live in the technological era, so we should take advantage of it! There’s tons of programs to do this, like Skype, Google Hangouts or FaceTime. Even though talking on the phone is nice, it’s so much better to see your significant other’s face in real time!

Send photos/snaps

Receiving a selfie from your significant other during an otherwise dull day is a great pick-me-up!  Sending photos can also make a text update more meaningful. It is also a great go-between when you don’t have enough time to video chat or call.

Surprise letters

There’s nothing more romantic than a love letter! You don’t have to be mushy if you don’t want to. You can simply send some kind words or even slip in some small goodies like tea bags or bookmarks. It doesn’t have to be fancy; it’s just nice to know that someone is thinking of you enough to actually put pen to paper!

Watch shows together

A major loss during time apart is spending quality time together. Besides talking, there’s not much you can do when you’re not physically together! With the help of websites like Rabb.it, you can watch shows together in real time, and video chat or audio chat meanwhile! You can watch Youtube, Netflix or even just browse the internet together! My girlfriend and I do this all the time, and it definitely makes being apart easier.

Gifts

First of all, who doesn’t love gifts? And who doesn’t love surprise gifts? Sending an unexpected package is a great way to brighten your significant other’s day!

Plan to see each other

Planning to see each other reminds you that long-distance relationships will eventually become in-person relationships! Though it may be hard when you’re apart, counting down the days gives you both something to look forward to. There are even two-way apps to do this!

I hope these tips help you and your significant other’s relationship just a bit easier!
