Why Taking a Gap Year is Literally the Best

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCU chapter.

Some people are scared that taking a gap year after they graduate from high school or undergraduate college will set them back a year behind their peers. Some of their peers will be working full time jobs or attending school to obtain a graduate, or professional degree. Taking a gap year can be scary because most of us have not had a break from school since we started kindergarten, but for some people taking a year break can be the best things for them. Taking a gap year actually has its benefits it can boost your gap, you can get new work experiences, and you can even travel the world.

Studies of gap year students have shown that people who take a gap year actually get higher grades in college compared to their peers who don’t take a gap year. Studies believe this is because taking a year off can save students from academic burnout and that taking a year off can help you do things that relate to your future career can also help you get more excited about your studies; so, you’re more interested in your classes and motivated to do well.

You can also get work experience in a field related to the career you want. Many companies and organizations offer half-year or full-year internships or volunteer positions, these positions are extremely beneficial, and something most students in school won’t be able to take advantage of.

If you do not want to spend your gap year working in the field you plan on majoring in and getting a career in, you can choose to spend your gap year doing something you’d never have a chance to do otherwise; plus, you will still gain useful skills and knowledge. If you decide to take any kind of a job or an internship during your gap year that pays, you could make a significant chunk of change during that year. Even if your job only pays minimum wage, you can still make about $15,000 in a year if you work full time, and you can put that money towards paying for school or other expenses.

Finally, Taking a gap year can help you get a much better sense of what kind of career you actually want. So many people waste years of time and tens of thousands of dollars in tuition money to graduate with a degree in a field they do not truly love. Then they are unhappy with their career and are living in deb.

Taking a gap year can put you ahead of a lot of other students because you’ll have a better idea of what you want to do school and career wise.  You can do a job in a career you think you love, or in something you never considered a career in. You really only know if a certain career is a good fit for you after you try it out, and a gap year is a great, low-risk way to get that experience.
