Melissa Hardman: Classic Chic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

This week’s campus cutie is Melissa Hardman who exibits the classic chic style.

What’s your major?

I have a BS from Georgia Tech when I graduated in 2010 and I’m in the MA English program at GCSU.

Where’s your hometown?

I am from Covington, GA.

Where do you work?

I tutor remedial English at Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Last year I taught English 1101 and 1102 at GC.

Are you in a relationship?

I have been reunited with a high school sweetheart for 1 year and 4 months now.

What do you do in your spare time?

I work out, do pilates, go to the lake, ride 4-wheelers and canoe. Also, I never miss the T.V. show “General Hospital.”

What are your hobbies?

I’m interested in antiques, literature and classic rock. I college vinyl records, guitars and taxidermy.

Do you have a special talent?

I play the flute, piano and guitar.

Where do you shop?

I shop at Macy’s and Dillards. My favorite brands are Lucky, Ralph Lauren, INC, and Jessica Simpson.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

I have enjoyed teaching in the past but once I graduate I would rather get an administrative job in a college setting. I might return to teaching one day, but these are not the most steady jobs. I have previously worked as an assistant to a program director so I have gained some insight into how colleges are run.

What has been your most enlightening experience in college?

In college, it was very enlightening to interact with international students because I never came into contact with many living in rural Georgia. Living in a huge city like Atlanta was also very challenging and led me to conclude that I never want to live in Atlanta, but instead prefer rural life. It was a big challenge to learn to take care of problems and figure things out on my own without my parents’ help, but I did.

Any advice for students considering getting a masters?

For students who are considering gradutate school, I would advise them to think carefully about what field they would study. Consider what would give you the best job prospets. Also, there is no need to start it immediately after your undergraduate degree. Get some work experience to build your resume and to help you decide what graduate degree would benefit you. Choose a school with programs tailored to your needs. If you know you will need summer, evening, weekend or even online classes, make sure the graduate program and the school itself offers this, or it will be very hard for you to finish while juggling work, school and life.

How about relationships?

I would advise students in college to date a lot of different people and have fun, but also to realize that it will be much harder to meet someone special once you are out of college. Your social life will change drastically once you are out of college, but also you might not realize what type of person you really want to be with until you are out of college. Luckily I came home and eventually reunited with a past love, but not everyone gets that chance. Be careful about who you settle down with and make sure you know them and their family well. Having a similar background and upbringing is definitely an important factor in how a relationship works out.

Life in general?

Now that I am 25, I feel like I finally know what kind of person I want to be and what I want out of life. Also, I am more similar to the person I was before high school. For this reason, I would advise people to be very careful when making decisions in your teen years and early 20s. It’s easy to be impulsive and jump into things. One day you will wake up and realize that your parents were right about most things and you will realize it’s okay to want the things they wanted for you.

I'm a senior here at Georgia College. My major is English, with a concentration in creative writing, and a minor in Marketing. I love to write fiction with dabbles in poetry. I'm happily taken with the love of my life and we have an adorable puppy (that's mostly his, but I like to steal him.) Working with HerCampus has allowed me to get to know some wonderful girls and I couldn't be happier with the experience.
