Ye or Nay: FSU Students Thoughts on Ye Controversy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

The controversy surrounding Ye, formerly known as Kanye, is a tale as old as time. Since his divorce from Kim Kardashian, he seems to have thrown fuel on the fire again by making some antisemitic statements and wearing clothing associated with white supremacists. While many of Ye’s antics have been overlooked as mental illness, these statements have got people thinking a bit differently. He has continued to put out his thoughts and theories, causing him to lose brand deals and supporters. Many have been calling him “canceled” while there have been others who have praised him for his words. So what do Florida State University (FSU) students think about the controversy and cancellation of Ye? Has putting his opinions out so publicly made any changes on FSU’s campus?

When asked about their opinions on Ye’s antisemitic statements, one FSU student said, “[They] are incredibly harmful and play into the resurgence of dangerous ideologies we have notoriously seen in the past.”

On campus, there have been some antisemitic groups sharing their opinions of such openly. These groups have made some students feel uncomfortable. Ye’s statements also open the possibility for more controversial groups to promote their beliefs on campus. “Students of Jewish culture are being triggered by these hateful statements across campus,” said one FSU student.

Ye has also stated he’s starting his journey to run for President in 2024. This was a dream he once had in 2020, but after getting only around 70,000 votes, that dream became short-lived. He says that he will run again in 2024 and has made claims that he’s asked Donald Trump to be his running mate.

Students across campus have shared their opinions on his potential presidential run. One stated, “I think he should be able to do what he wants, but I don’t necessarily think people will take him seriously, especially with the developments of public perception and his ongoing mental health struggles.” They went on to explain that even though anyone who wants should be able to run despite having various issues, said issues don’t excuse antisemitic comments. Another stated, “Ye’s narcissistic and bipolar personality once again pushes him to an unrealistic campaign that is bound to fail and will only further damage his public image.”

Ye’s statements have brought the word “canceled” into play. Cancel culture has exponentially grown since the rise of TikTok, and more and more social media stars and celebrities are being considered canceled. While many believe that Ye’s antisemitic statements have canceled him, some have begun to follow him. In the opinion of one FSU student, “Ye is canceled. He is one of, if not the face of cancel culture.” Another said, “I don’t consider him canceled per se because cancel culture is so temporary and can be bandaged rather quickly. However, I don’t think the view he is making for himself is promoting his presidential campaign or his platform.”

With Ye’s mind, you never know what will come next. While some believe Ye can begin on the road to redemption, others believe there may not be one for Ye. To support the Jewish community on campus, you can find information on their events here.
