Word of South: Tallahassee’s Festival of Literature and Music

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Can’t make it to Coachella this year? Don’t worry, Tallahassee has you covered!  With performances from over 100 internationally known musicians and authors, the Word of South Festival is like no other.

Mark your calendars because the fourth annual Word of South Festival will be held in Cascades Park, rain or shine, from April 13 to April 15.  This event showcases an array of artistic talent in a unique fusion of music and literature.  Word of South prides itself on the festival featuring “authors who write about music, musicians who are also authors, authors and musicians appearing together, and everything in between.” Attending this festival is a truly a one of a kind experience.

The 2018 lineup features a variety of artists like authors Jason Reynolds and Rick Braggs to musicians such as Suzanne Vega, The Good Little Chickens, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band (tickets needed for Tedeschi Trucks Band performance).

The best part? The festival is free!

And did we mention that dogs, while not allowed in the amphitheater, are allowed in the park for the festival? Can it get any better?

“I love good festivals, but this is one that has really found a niche,” said entertainment writer and columnist Mark Hinson in a video found on the Word of South website. “This is an original. When you describe it, I can’t think of another festival that brings together real writers or serious writers and real musicians.”

Not only is Word of South a way to get your festival season fill, but it is becoming a Tallahassee staple. The first Word of South Festival kicked off in 2015 and it’s only growing larger. Its distinctive and innovate style is attracting an audience from college students to residents with families to out of state music festival fans.  An aspiration of the festival is for it to become as known as Springtime Tallahassee, a community building event.  Word of South provides a platform for creators to reach out directly to their audience, uniting both literature and music lovers.

In addition to providing entertainment, Word of South has an initiative to encourage creativity in kids. The Kid’s Fest kicks off on Saturday, April 14. Authors and musicians for kids will be present and each kid gets a free book.

“We really want to thank all the sponsors, all the volunteers, and everybody that made this happen. Word of South went from an idea to a success and we want to build on it and make it go bigger,” said Festival Founder Mark Mustain.

We’re looking forward this year’s festival and what is to come next for Word of South!
