Why Josh Hernandez Should Be Your Valentine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Name: Joshua Hernandez

Age: 19

Year: Sophomore

Major: Theatre

Hometown: Miami, FL

Relationship Status: Single

Her Campus (HC): So, you’re a sophomore, but you spent your freshman year at FIU in your hometown. What led you to leave, and where do you like it better? At Florida State or FIU?

Josh Hernandez (JH): Well, FSU is known for their arts program, and their theatre program is really prestigious. So I wanted to go to a school that would challenge me and teach me all the right things that would lead me to succeed in my future. In regards to where I like it better, I’m happy with in the choice I made in coming to FSU.

HC: How do you feel going away for school has changed you as a person?

JH: It’s made me more independent and I’ve definitely become more confident in the fact that I know I can achieve my dreams up here. It’s nice to experience new things away from home. I’ve learned how to live with other people who aren’t my family, and it was great because one of my roommates has been my best friend since middle school. I live with her and her friend, Natalia.

HC: Whoa, you live with two girls? How’s that?

JH: [Laughs] It’s different from living with guys, that’s for sure. I have to constantly make sure I don’t walk around in my underwear. I have to be more careful in the things I say and do. In other aspects, it’s good ‘cause they’re really clean, they’re understanding, and they’re really cool to be around. It’s nice to see a girl’s perspective on things. I think that’s the reason why I treat women so nicely, ‘cause I’m always around them.

HC: Hubba hubba! So you know how to treat women! You sound like quite the catch. Why’s a good-looking guy like you single?

JH: I don’t know, I guess I haven’t really found the right person yet. Doesn’t mean I’m not looking though!

Don’t worry Collegiettes this is his sister!

HC: So what qualities do you look for in a significant other?

JH: Someone I can relate to, someone with a nice personality. I look for someone who will understand my sarcasm and someone that shares the same love for movies. I like a sporty person. Overall, I like a person who I can get along with.

HC: Sound good! So, lets talk theatre. Why do you love it and why do you do it?

JH: To be honest, I really love the performance aspect of theatre. It’s a way to express myself creatively. I like to entertain audiences. It makes me feel good about myself, and it’s a way to bring people together in a way that’s indescribable. The real reason I want to become an actor is because I want to illicit a response from my audience. I’ve watched countless films and theatrical productions and I know an actor is really great when they can make me smile, and laugh, or even cry! My goal is to do the same for my audience. I want to make them feel something when they watch me.

HC: What kind of productions have you been involved with, and which has been your favorite thus far?

JH: I’m very grateful to have been involved in a number of productions: musicals, plays, short films, even a major motion picture. I did Tarzan and Aladdin in high school. I was in a community production of Rabbit Hole in Miami and I did James and the Giant Peach, here at the school of theatre. I played The Old Green Grasshopper. As for my favorite? I’d have to say James, because I really enjoyed the process and the people I worked with. The experience as a whole was really amazing. I enjoyed every single rehearsal and I grew from it. I did things I didn’t know I could do.

Josh is the grasshopper to the bottom right!

HC: Whoa, lets take a step back. You said you were in a major motion picture? Which?

JH: Yea, I was lucky enough to be in The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay—Part 1. Even though I was just an extra, it was still an amazing experience. I got to work alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Dormer and Liam Hemsworth, and I got to witness how much hard work is actually put into a professional movie. I was only there for two days, but it was the best two days of my life.
