For Which We Stand: Interview With New Author and AP Government/Politics Teacher, Jeff Foster

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Growing up, when I thought of history and government/politics, it was always followed by a groan because I never really grasped the importance of the subject until high school. With the election this past week, I thought I would interview my AP Government/Politics teacher from senior year, who not only is at the forefront of teaching such relevant material, but also recently published a book all about it, geared towards the younger generation, but helpful for all.

Her Campus (HC): Can you give a brief summary of who you are, what do you teach, for how long, and why did you decide to teach this subject?

Jeff Foster (JF):  My name is Jeff Foster and I’ve been teaching Advanced Placement Government and Politics for 20 years at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I’ve always had a passion for civics education, and I jumped at the chance when I was offered the class.

HC:  Are you teaching in person this year? And if not, how has lesson planning changed in order to keep everyone engaged?

JF:  I’m teaching virtually. My lessons are similar with the exception of all the material being turned in through the canvas modules.

HC:  Can you give a quick summary of “For Which We Stand: How Our Government Works and Why It Matters”?

JF:  My book is a comprehensive look at our republic geared towards grades three through eight (although it is a greater refresher for all), that covers all the institutions of American government, political parties and how the electoral college works among other things.

HC:  What made you want to write a book and how did you come up with this direction for “For Which We Stand”?

JF:  As a father with two kids in this age demographic (9 and 14), I wanted to create a guidebook to give them, as well as their generation, a clear and engaging look at civics.

HC:  What is your main goal/takeaway for those who read “For Which We Stand”?

JF:  My goal for this book was not only to explain how the government works to young readers but more importantly show them the ways that they can contribute to our democracy.

HC:  How did your writing process and research go for the book?

JF:  I started with an outline in August of 2019, and then worked on the book on the weekends and after school continually until January. Most of the material from the book came from my head, since I have taught this subject for twenty years.

HC:  Do you plan to write anything else in the future?

JF:  Scholastic is very pleased with the result and the reviews that the book is receiving and is very interested in working together in the future.

HC:  With the election already called by the time this article goes up, what do you think is the most important thing for this generation of new voters and young adults in general?

JF:  I think it’s imperative that young adults continue to stay involved in the political arena and not allow others to decide your future. Participate and vote!

“For Which We Stand: How Our Government Works and Why It Matters” is available to purchase in paperback and Kindle format on Amazon, as well as Target, Barnes and Noble and all major book outlets.
