What to Expect in Your First College Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Welcome to college: a wonderful world filled with academics, clubs and gorgeous guys who you are being introduced to everyday. You step into your dormitory and a handsome man catches your eye, but you freeze; you have never had a college relationship before and now that you are ready to put yourself out there since high school, you ask yourself, “What is a college relationship going to be like?” Here are a few things that you need to know about a college relationship:

You get to learn about a whole new person

You have never been with this person before until now. You do not know what their past was. You do not know what high school was like for them or what they are like back home. The more time you spend with each other the more you’ll get to know about one another. As scary as it seems that you weren’t apart of his life before now, it makes the early stages of your relationship so exciting.

You must manage your time

You’re in this relationship now with all the time available for you to choose when you want to hang out with your boyfriend. This means you should crack down on the time you spend with him, with your friends and on your schoolwork. It gets exciting at the beginning because you don’t have a seven-hour day, five-day a week school schedule, or parents keeping track of you anymore, but you also have other priorities you need to center your attention on.

Sleepovers?! Oh my…

Finally! Your boyfriend can sleep over now that you no longer have a parent to check up on you at night. If you had parents like mine in high school, your boyfriend was never allowed to sleep over. It is always something to look forward to at the end of the day and when you wake up in the morning.

Making new memories

There is a lot to do on a college campus and in the city that surrounds it that you haven’t done before. Take this opportunity to explore and make new memories together. Those are the ones you won’t ever forget.

To make the most of your college relationship, apply these tips:

  1. Make dates that occur outside of the campus scene to keep things interesting.
  2. Be open to new experiences: if you’re not a “going out” person and he is, put yourself out there and go to tailgates or a bar every now and then with him.
  3. Do not spend too much time with your boyfriend that you ditch your friends. You still need GNOs with your best friends.
  4. Every now and then it is okay to stay in and study or watch a movie together. College is stressful and sometimes you just need those days of staying in and relaxing together while sharing a few laughs.

Collegiettes, entering a college relationship may be scary because you’re literally starting at stage one of meeting this brand new person for the first time. However, it can only go up from there. Just make sure when you find that college relationship to look for the characteristics that stand out to you and are compatible with yours.
