Her Campus (HC): What exactly does cinematography entail?
Victor Ingles (VI): A Cinematographer, or Director of Photography, is in charge of the camera and lighting team on set. The DP works closely with the Director to establish a “look” for the film. It depends on the director, but some DPs are given complete creative control and choose the framing, lenses, motion of the camera, etc. Some Directors can be very particular about their film and tell the cinematographer exactly what to do and they’ll execute it.
HC: Why were you initially drawn to film?
VI: I’ve always loved watching movies. The whole process of filmmaking is amazing, and there’s nothing more rewarding than being able to make something and have it connect emotionally with an audience member.
HC: What was your favorite video to produce?
VI: I love some of the videos I did back in High School. My favorite one was a short shot-for-shot parody I did of Inception my senior year. We called it Ultimaception. I remember having a blast shooting it. Just going out to the parks after school or to a friend’s house was always so much fun. There’s nothing like making a movie with some of your very close friends.
HC: What is your favorite memory about shooting Ultimaception?
VI: We actually drove my friend’s really old jeep onto the soccer fields at school. I don’t know, maybe I remember that moment so well because we weren’t allowed to drive a truck on the field and we did it anyways.
HC: What long term goals do you have when it comes to filmmaking?
VI: I would love to move to LA after I graduate. Working on film sets is the best way to gain experience and meet other filmmakers. I would love to work on a camera team possible as a camera assistant to start off. A camera assistant job usually consists of building the camera, changing lenses, slating shots, and pulling focus.
HC: That sounds like a really neat job! What is your favorite genre to record and why?
VI: Narrative films are probably my favorite. I don’t have a preference as to what kind of narrative but I love thrillers, dramas, comedies, and westerns. I would also love to work on music videos and documentaries.
HC: What would be a piece of advice for someone who wants to try their hand at film?
VI: A piece of advice I would give to new filmmakers is to keep shooting films. Write and shoot something with your friends, doesn’t matter how good or bad it can be because as long as you had fun and learned something new, you’re always improving.
