Ranya Salvant: Barista Extraordinaire

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Whether it’s pumping out caffeine from the Strozier Library Starbucks or managing the funds of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., Ranya Salvant is a celebrity all in her own league. This girl can do it all — she’s an academic brain with multiple spheres of expertise, has a good head on her shoulders, and has amazingly bold and exciting plans for her future. No matter what she does, this sassy vegan always does it well.

Name: Ranya Jennifer Salvant

Year: Senior

Major and Minor: Finance major with an English minor

Her Campus (HC): What are your plans for after graduation?

Ranya Salvant (RS): My plans after graduation are to finish getting my wedding planner certificate, and once I’m done with that, I plan to travel abroad for a couple of years because I loved the experience I had when I studied abroad in London, England in my sophomore year. I have already started applying for the Peace Corps, and I want to go to Morocco or another part of Africa. When I come back, I do plan to start my own business and live in Seattle.

HC: How do you feel about leaving FSU?

RS: I feel almost bittersweet about leaving Florida State. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m so ready to explore the world and be free and constantly making an impact outside of Tallahassee. FSU will always [have my] heart, though. It’s made me into the woman I am today — good and not so good.

HC: What organizations have you been involved with on campus?

RS: I was involved with Kolors of Kurves. I volunteered at the last fashion show that was held at Coliseum in the fall. I’m also a member of Women in Accounting and was in the National Association of Black Accountants, organizing for America in the fall of 2012. Also, I am in Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. where I serve as Treasurer, Fundraising Chair, and Public Relations Chair. Next fall I will be Performance coordinator.

HC: When did you start working at Starbucks?

RS: I started working at Starbucks the week after my 20th birthday. It was the most perfect gift at the time. So it will be two years since I’ve worked there, come July 18th.

HC: What’s something unexpected that came with working at Starbucks?

RS: Working at Starbucks, I didn’t think I was going to obtain the ability to make drinks now without looking at my hands. I can easily make that one girl her ½ decaf upside down macchiato with hazelnut and caramel drizzle with a splash of vanilla bean and the whole time I’ll be looking at her face. And when I’m done, the drink looks perfect. I knew I was going to learn how to make the drinks and be totally awesome at it, but never to that extent of awesomeness.

HC: If you could have your own Starbucks drink, what would it be, and what would it be called?

RS: I do have my own Starbucks drink. It’s called the Foxy Brown — it’s a mocha, white mocha frappucino with vanilla bean, java chips, and toffeenut — with caramel on top.
