Now, the new year may have caught a lot of people by surprise. The wishes for a new spring semester wardrobe quickly diminished with the cold weather, then completely disappeared once pollen threatened your very existence. Fortunately, summer is coming up, so good vibes, great waves and sunny skies are on their way.

In the spirit of such a wonderful season, I’m here to provide a few tips on spring cleaning and what I’m doing to prepare a fresh slate for summer break.

slim down

A simple rule I follow when deciding what to keep and what to give away is to ask, “Do I wear this?” This question is completely different from the common “I’ll wear this when…” Being intentional in this process of trimming down the closet will prevent overcrowding when buying more items and will overall give your closet a better look. When you can see what’s in your closet, you will also know what’s in your closet and it will be much easier to find the next best fit.

how to get rid of these clothes?

Alright, so now everything is just in a large trash bag taking up a lot of floor space. Where will all this stuff go? An easy answer is the classic “I’ll just put it in this room and come back to it later” lie. In the efforts of true spring cleaning, I recommend utilizing people you know, donation centers like Goodwill and buy-and-sell places like Plato’s Closet. It’s always good to minimize the amount of waste that’s put into the environment. Moreover, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

organize and assess

Now that there is more room, it’s time for organizing! There are a lot of fancy boxes and organizing tools available on Amazon. If you’re anything like me, being able to find clothes in the morning is a must! But with organization, you always have to look at your space and work with it, especially in college.

A good way of doing this is by adding some boxes and utilizing drawer space to its fullest capacity. A great space saver is folding jeans.

shop!

When shopping, I always think of how much I am looking to spend and ensure that I do not exceed that amount. Shopping within a budget holds you accountable and prevents surprises from happening later.

What to shop for? Shop for what you want to wear.

There will always be crazy trends and fads, but these fade away. So, once in a while, I’ll participate if a trend is cute. However, for the most part, I like to stick to items I know I’ll wear. After all, who else’s opinion really matters? This took some practice to master. Because yes, an outfit may look super cute, but will I wear it? Or will it become a sitting piece in my closet? It may be hard to immediately see the downfalls of “sitting” closet pieces, but one leads to two and two leads to four. Before you know it, it’s the next spring and the cycle of slimming down has to repeat again.

So, slimming down the closet for this upcoming season is a great way to get started. When I’m cleaning out my closet, sometimes I tend to think, “Now I’m not going to have any clothes!” This statement is completely far from the truth. As a matter of fact, I hadn’t worn those clothes and the probability that I would wear them was very slim if not nonexistent. Clear the clutter!

Happy spring cleaning!
