The Perfect Makeup Tutorial for Halloween: How to be a Creepy Doll

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

It’s October, which means Talloween is right around the corner! While you’re compiling your list of costumes (because you’ll definitely need more than one), consider ditching the seasonal costume store and stop by your local drugstore for some makeup. This creepy doll look incorporates the scariness of Halloween while still being fun and girly. Wear it with a skater skirt and a simple top and you’re good to go!

For this look, I suggest starting with a luminous primer like the NYX Born To Glow Liquid Illuminator ($7.50). A primer with a little bit of shine will give you a glow from within. You’ll also want to use a full coverage foundation. This will give your skin that smooth, porcelain doll look we’re going for.

There are only two products that are absolutely vital for the eyes: a black pencil and a white one. The NYX Jumbo Eye pencils  ($4.50) are my favorite ones to use, and they’re affordable! Start by using the white pencil on your waterline and to color in a half circle under your eye. Just color over those dark under-eye circles all collegiettes have from endless nights of partying! I mean… “studying.” Next, use the black pencil all over your lid and to outline the white half circle you just drew. Make sure the black lines touch both corners of your eyes because we’re going for bold, round, semi-creepy puppet eyes! That’s all that is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the eyes, but you can make it your own by smoking out the eyes with a silver eyeshadow or drawing on eyelashes with gel eyeliner.

Now pick up your favorite bold blush and pack on the color! (Tip: if you don’t own a blush, just use an eyeshadow!) Use a dense brush and focus the color on the apples of your cheeks. If you think it’s looking a little too harsh, take a fluffy brush and blend the edges out. Now for my favorite part, the faux freckles! You could use just about any liquid or cream product here (I used a liquid lipstick). Pick a color that is 2-3 times darker than your actual skin tone and use a small, skinny brush to dot your face. Make marks over the bridge of your nose and towards your cheeks. The key here is to make your marks different sizes and to make some darker than others to make them look more realistic.

Now for the staple to the puppet look. Use that same black pencil and draw two parallel lines starting from both corners of your mouth, down to your skin. Move slowly so you can make sure they’re straight. But if they’re not, just use a Q-tip and some makeup remover to straighten them out. Lastly, pick out a brightly colored lipstick and apply! I suggest the Milani Amor Matte Lip Crèmes ($8.99). Now go out and find yourself a playmate! Maybe you could pull some strings and get them to dance with you.
