Our Noles on the Upcoming Release Of “Fifty Shades of Grey”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Collegiettesas you know, Valentine’s Day is approaching! If you happen to still be scrambling for ideas on what to do this weekend to mark the special holiday, let me remind you that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is being released in theaters this Friday. This Twilight fan fiction novel has continued to dominate the bestseller list since its release in 2011; however, Fifty Shades of Grey has been met with a lot of differing opinions as to what the book is portraying. Some people believe the book romanticizes domestic violence, while others see no cause for concern. I was curious to see if a lot of Florida State University student’s plan on seeing the film this weekend.  I especially wanted to know if Christian Grey would make an appearance on the student’s agenda for Galentines Day or not.

I decided to look into the subject by asking our fellow Noles what they thought of the series and whether or not they were planning on watching the film in theaters. Here are a few responses:

Sophomore Claire Beaver remarks, “I am so excited to see this movie on Valentine’s Day. It will be a great bonding experience for my single girlfriends and me. The movie is about crazy sex, but also romance and love which are the two things every girl wants for Valentine’s Day.”

Senior Barbara Truszkowski states, “I think that even though this book was an unusual one on the New York Times Bestseller list, it simply tells the story of a young girl falling in love and exploring the passion she has for a man.”

Junior Megan McConnaughay comments, “I’m so excited, I literally can’t think of anything I’d rather do on Valentine’s Day than eat chocolate and watch Fifty Shades of Grey in the theater with my girlfriends. Even if I had a boyfriend, going to see the film would still be an imperative part of the weekend.”

Junior Karissa Pendleton says, “I’m so excited to see Fifty Shades of Grey. I fell in love with the characters when I was reading the books. I just wish the real love of my life Ian Somerhalder was cast as Christian Grey.”

Karissa is one of the many who believe the casting for the film could have been a lot better. Here are just a few actors that many considered would make the perfect Christian Grey.

Senior Derek Guzman comments, “I like the aspect of BDSM because it’s sexy, but the romance plot is way too cheesy for me.”

Senior Sabrina Torres states, “I personally don’t appreciate the fact that the book romanticizes domestic violence. I know a lot of people would argue that it is just an erotic fantasy, but the psychological abuse the protagonist allows her partner to put her through is not something that anyone should look for in a relationship.”

Junior Savanna Sharum remarks, “Fifty Shades of Grey is not something that I would have normally read, but I did on a suggestion from my friend and I’m glad I did.  It was a great romantic story that made you not want to put the books down.”

Anna Iturra is a senior at Florida State University studying Media/Communication Studies. She loves reading celebrity autobiographies, eating out at local Tallahassee restaurants,  reading the latest edition of Glamour and watching movies for three dollars at the Movies 8 theater. She can't live without coffee, wine or Netflix (currently addicted to Lost). She aspires to be like Mindy Kaling and she hopes to one day live in London.
