The Anticipated Release of Colleen Hoover’s Sequel, “It Starts With Us”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

American author Colleen Hoover announced her new novel, It Starts With Us, to be released in Oct. 2022. Her popularity may be attributed to her recent rise on the social media application, TikTok, through the active virtual community named “BookTok.” The users within BookTok have become captivated by the author’s writing and storylines. Hoover’s upcoming book release is the sequel to her bestselling novel, It Ends With Us, which focuses on domestic abuse

Hoover’s It Ends With Us allows readers to empathize with the main character Lily, a survivor, and the recurring cycle of abuse within her family. The novel introduces the perpetrator, Ryle, as the ideal boyfriend, letting the reader and Lily fall in love with him simultaneously, while describing violent situations for which the reader and Lily may form excuses. Hoover displays the slow progression of the abuse that Lily endures to further show how difficult it is to escape the cycle. At the end of the novel, Lily’s character escapes the abusive relationship and is now able to raise her child in a healthy environment. Therefore, a family without violence starts with Lily’s new addition, her daughter. It Starts With Us will share what comes afterward, from a different perspective.

It Starts With Us will be written from the perspective of Atlas, Lily’s first love. It provides the readers with an opportunity to view the abusive relationship through an outsider’s point of view to bring attention to the different experiences they endure both as viewers and as survivors of abuse. Hoover also spotlights the difficulties that mothers may encounter when deciding to raise a child with a violent father. However, the book does display the possibility of loving the child through limited co-parenting, and the ability of survivors to find healthy love.

To further promote the upcoming series, actor Justin Baldoni’s company has optioned the film rights to produce a movie inspired by Hoover’s novels. Baldoni and Hoover decided to gather a selected number of Hoover’s fans to read and allow commentary on the script. Because of this interactive approach in gaining their fans’ approval, Hoover is able to satisfy fans with the film and her upcoming sequel. Although the film is expected to be released in 2023, this is leading to more anticipation for the sequel It Starts With Us releasing this October.

To connect with fans, Hoover announces most of her upcoming book releases through her social media, such as Instagram. If readers want exclusive access to the first two chapters of It Starts With Us, they can pre-order the book now and have it in their inbox within minutes! The option is only available until Oct. 17 at 11:59 PM ET for ages 18 and over. This special offer can further excite readers about what to expect in her sequel.
