My Closet Essentials for Hot Girl Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

As someone from Central Florida, when I first came to FSU, I was rudely awakened by the temperature difference. It was much colder in Tallahassee than I expected during the winter. It’s safe to say that I understand the pain of those who have had a similar revelation but are unsure what to wear (because Floridians don’t own winter clothes).

In the past, during the winter months, I’ve had a “glow-down.” I’m unsure if it’s because my winter wardrobe lacked cute attire in high school, but I’ve noticeably felt less pretty or confident during the colder months of the last few years. This year, though, I feel more confident and prettier than ever. I think that because I’ve acquired more winter clothes that I enjoy wearing, I feel more confident. Though I could always stand to own more warm clothes for this chilly season, here are my closet essentials for Hot Girl Winter.

LEATHER JACKET

I never thought I’d own a leather jacket. However, recently, having one has come in handy for surviving the winters up here. I don’t like being too bundled up because the heat blares every place I step into. De-layering is a pain! With a leather jacket, though, I can wear a crop top and feel warm. That’s a Florida girl’s dream.

THIN SWEATER or TURTLENECK

This comes in handy when you want to look cute on your way to class. Don’t get me wrong, I love wearing sweatpants and a hoodie, but sometimes I get tired of looking like I just rolled out of bed. A simple, thin sweater with leggings will do the trick! On the other hand, a cute turtleneck paired with the right skirt could also be the cute or comfy move for a campus outfit! Either will do, and best of all, you’ll feel warm.

TIGHTS

As an ex-dancer, younger me would have run three miles before putting on a pair of tights by choice. I’d like to think I’ve evolved because a cute pair of black tights can really elevate an outfit. Plus, with tights, you can avoid wearing pants (Floridians need to be better versed in pants). Instead, you could pair this with some cute shorts or a skirt!

BOOTS

The proper boots can work well with any look. Whether you’re into Uggs or prefer a knee-high black boot to wear out, these shoes are an essential part of winter. Finding a few pairs of staple boots that I enjoy wearing changed the game for me completely.

Honorable Mentions: Dark Jeans, Trench Coat, Long-Sleeve Jumpsuit, Blazer

Disclaimer: I don’t own some of these items, which is why they sit in the honorable mentions. Though these didn’t make the original cut, these are a few other ways to elevate your winter outfits! Dark jeans are always a staple, a good trench coat will look great for business casual days, long-sleeve jumpsuits look good with almost anything (and are super comfortable), and blazers are always a win.

The wardrobe transition from teenage years to adulthood can be overwhelming, expensive, and draining. Despite this, I hope these few winter wardrobe pieces can help elevate your closet without breaking the bank or creating too much clutter.
