Growing up in the Southeast, my wardrobe has always consisted of mostly shorts and tank tops. Besides the occasional opportunity to use the fleece or flannel living in the storage bin under my bed, I haven’t had many chances to embrace fall fashion. However, this hasn’t stopped me and many other southern girls from breaking out our cold weather apparel year-round. My Midwestern mother loves to comment on how kids from Florida don’t know how to dress; we wear sweatshirts in the summer and tank tops in the winter.

For all the girls who are looking for a fashionable sweet spot that’s just warm enough for the temperate winters of the Southeast, I present to you: layers. They’re the key to comfort when the weather is chilly in the mornings but somehow still hot by noon. Being born and raised in Florida, layering was an art I had to learn. I’ve compiled my top five tips for layering so you can take on any weather looking (but not feeling) hot.

Tights

Tights are a great way to add a fall spin to your outfit without overheating. They’re also incredibly versatile, coming in a variety of colors and patterns. Layer black tights under dresses or skirts for a classy, timeless look. Alternatively, style them with denim shorts for a grungier outfit. Try something bolder by opting for red tights or a striking pattern with a simple, muted outer layer.

Lace Layers

Lace garments are a great way to add a breathable layer. Lace lets you wear a long-sleeve top without being too warm, which is perfect for in-between weather. They’re a great option for going out since they’ll keep you cool in hot, crowded spaces but provide some coverage for the chilly walk home. Try pairing a lace long-sleeve and a black leather jacket for a chic nighttime look.

Pashminas

What’s better than a garment that doubles as a shawl and a scarf? Pashminas can be worn in several different ways, making them the perfect accessory for weather that’s always changing. Wear one unwrapped around your neck for a layer that won’t make you overheat or drape it over your shoulders if there’s a chill in the air. Pro-tip: don’t put it in the washing machine EVER. It will shrink (I speak from experience).

Dresses

Dresses are one of my favorite bases for layering. They’re breathable and flowy, making them perfect for weather that’s a little warmer than you thought it would be before you stepped outside for the day. Layer a sleeveless dress over a turtleneck and add any accessory from this list, and you’ll have a fall outfit that will make you feel like you’re up north even if it’s only 70 degrees.

Fun Socks

Don’t forget your feet get cold too! Fun socks are a great option for adding a layer to your outfit, and there are options to suit any style. Scrunch some funky crew socks down with a white sneaker and mom jeans for a vintage, ’80s-inspired look. If you’re going for something more coquette, opt for frilly socks paired with Mary Janes or a pair of Doc Martens for contrast.

Hopefully, these five tips for layering will help keep you both warm and cool this Florida fall!
