Leon County is hosting it’s annual 3k walk on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Cascades Park. The event starts at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 3 p.m. This walk is a part of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) network. The MSABC walks are one of the largest networks of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. There are more than one million volunteers nationwide. When you get involved in a MSABC walk you support every single person affected by breast cancer.
The individuals in charge of the event are calling upon the citizens of Tallahassee to volunteer in order to help make the event run smoothly and ultimately a success. They are asking for volunteers from as early as 8 a.m. to as late at 5 p.m. to help with set up, clean up and throughout the day during the walk. As a volunteer or as a participant you can watch survivors and families come together to demonstrate that they are willing to stand against cancer.
In the United States, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer. To put that into perspective: If you count your grandmother, your mother, a sister, a girl friend, a co-worker and three other women in your life – one of these women will begin the fight against breast cancer at one point in their life. Breast cancer is estimated to kill 40,450 women in 2016 in the United States and this disease isn’t always predictable. About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who don’t have a family history of the disease. Leon County can help reduce these statistics if you go out and support the walk! With your support, valuable research can continue to fight for a cure for this disease.

This walk is dedicated to celebrating survivors and showing support for those still living with breast cancer. This event allows the community to come together and act as one. There are ways to register and fundraise money to help all of those affected.
The funds raised by these walks go directly to the American Cancer Society to assist in a variety of crucial areas to aid individuals and family members affected by breast cancer. The funds are allocated to areas such as innovative research to find a cure, and ways to detect breast cancer early on. The American Cancer Society also works to raise money so that they can offer free information and support programs to those touched by breast cancer.
