Fueling The Flame: The Seminole Way

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Picture this: people from all across the country, sharing laughs and new memories for an entire week, in an explosion of garnet and gold. Yup, it’s that time of year again, Homecoming! Of all the events here at Florida State University, Homecoming is definitely one that many await. Each year, the Homecoming committee works tirelessly day in and day out to make this week one of the most enjoyable experiences of one’s college career. This year, the theme is Fueling the Flame, and the events prepared for this week will be sure to do just that.

Now before I go any further in the itinerary for this year’s festivities for Homecoming, let me give you all some history. Homecoming here at Florida State is rich in tradition and every student that has graduated from this institute can definitely agree. The first Homecoming goes back to 1948 when the activities were only Friday and Saturday. There was no theme but there was a banquet, an elegant breakfast in the Dining Hall and a BBQ. As the years progressed ideas and creativity for Homecoming expanded, producing the first theme in 1950 and turning from just a weekend to an entire week long, celebrating our Alma Mater. Fun fact: The first theme for Homecoming in 1950 was “FSU All the Time.” Pretty nice.

Here we are generations later and the love for the school is still just as strong. Homecoming consists of Warchant (a concert in which Big Sean will be the special guest), Pow Wow (FSU’s largest pep rally), and other events such as Skit Night, and Renegade Recess. And who can forget the traditional Homecoming parade and football game? When asked what her favorite event of Homecoming is, senior Stephanie Cooper said “Homecoming Parade.” I, myself, must agree. The bringing together of various organizations and bodies of students all across campus is a beautiful thing. Participants in the parade range from Senators, to Agencies, to various registered student organizations. Yes, it is a weeklong of awesome Seminole activities and reunions. Alumni travel near and far to participate each year, and this year is expected to bring the numbers in. The football game will be played against the Virginia Cavaliers, and I can guarantee you that Doak Campbell Stadium will be at maximum capacity. A favorite of the Homecoming game for many is the crowning of the new Homecoming Chief and Homecoming Princess. The Homecoming Court is selected based on all of their hard work and dedication to Florida State during their tenure here at the institution. The student body will take it to the polls to vote and from there candidates will be crowned. Best of luck to all those on Homecoming Court—for that is a feat in itself!

So what will be your event that you look forward to the most this year at Homecoming? Will you catch some candy from the Garnet and Gold boys at the parade or share a high five with a stranger at the football game? Will you help fuel the flame by being the best Seminole you can be and partaking in most of all the events! Don’t let this week slip by and you regret not being in attendance. Homecoming at Florida State has been built on a huge legacy, so take part and keep the flame ignited. See you all there!
