Everything You Need to Know About The Condom-Snorting Challenge

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

We’ve seen everything: from the old-school cinnamon challenge to the latest and dangerous Tide Pod challenge. If you thought that things couldn’t get any weirder on the Internet, you haven’t heard of the condom-snorting challenge. Yes, you heard me right– the condom-snorting challenge. This challenge originated in 2013 with a video on YouTube. You may have some questions right about now. I did too.

What exactly is the Condom-Snorting Challenge?

Well, the first thing the person needs is an unwrapped condom. They then proceed to stuff the condom up one nostril and snort. They snort until the condom moves through the nasal passage and can be pulled out the mouth. You know when you laugh so hard that liquid comes out of your nose? Basically the same thing but the opposite direction.

What’s it look like?

Here it is. Pretty gross? Yes. Pretty uncomfortable? Definitely.

Wouldn’t this hurt?

Heck yeah, it probably hurts. I can’t speak from personal experience because sticking anything up my nose, as a mouth breather, isn’t appealing to me. Also, if you have ever had any liquid come out of your nose you know it’s not pleasant. I remember once when I was younger I laughed so hard that soda came running out. To this day I remember the sting of the soda and the embarrassment.

So why do it?

As social media has expanded and more teenagers are doing whatever it takes to up those likes, shares and follows the challenge has re-emerged. This is dangerous. I know we all want that satisfaction that comes from faking that your life is better than others but let’s just stick to posting our super healthy meal and vacations. Actually, let’s just have more pictures of pets. I think a video of you pulling a condom out of your mouth would really ruin your Instagram aesthetic.

Is this dangerous?

Yes. I’m not a doctor or even studying to be one yet I know that this is not healthy. Condoms were made with a specific purpose. They may be lined with lubricant or even ribbed. These substances can destroy the lining of your nose and can cause allergic reactions. Not to mention what could occur if someone were to actually swallow one of the condoms. There have been several cases where condoms have been inhaled and left the patient with a collapsed lung or pneumonia. The challenge is dangerous and should not be carried out by anyone.

Let’s leave the condom-snorting challenge back in 2013 where it belongs. If you’re looking for something cool or impressive to post on social media, there are plenty of safer activities that you could post. The likes and follows are not worth getting a condom stuck in your throat. Could you imagine how embarrassing that would be to have to go to the hospital to remove a condom from your throat that you tried to snort? That would be 10x worse than having to admit that you got your braces stuck on someone else’s while making out.
