If you’ve been on TikTok, you may have heard of Saltburn, which is a rated-R film that came out in theaters on Nov. 17. I went into this movie not knowing much about it and was left speechless. After being on TikTok and Instagram for only a few minutes, I can tell a lot of people feel the same way. I love the conversation surrounding this movie and want to dive more into why it’s great to see.

Saltburn is labeled as a thriller comedy but after seeing it, I’m not sure what to really call it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time because I genuinely didn’t know what was coming next. The tense feeling of not knowing along with the hilarious quips made it an entertaining film all the way through.

Saltburn follows a boy named Oliver who attends Oxford University. He becomes obsessed with a peer named Felix, who then ends up inviting him to his huge estate called Saltburn. This is when the film starts to surprise you at every turn! I would go more in detail on the plot, but I think going in not knowing anything makes it so much better.

Of course, another great thing about this movie is the actors in it. Many people talked about seeing this movie for one specific actor: Jacob Elordi. If you haven’t heard of him, Elordi is famous for his role as Nate Jacobs in the popular show Euphoria. Elordi received a ton of praise for this role, as he looked great and acted even better. He had to wear an eyebrow piercing for his character and it had people tweeting about it day and night. He also had the cutest outfits ranging in many different colors and aesthetics.

It was great seeing Elordi in this role but that doesn’t take away from his costar, Barry Keoghan. Keoghan may be a lesser-known actor, but I know him well from one of my favorite films, Killing of a Sacred Deer. I was excited to see him in this role as the main character and he did fabulously. Rosamund Pike also stole the show as Elsbeth, charming us with an amazingly off-putting performance.

Emerald Fennell is the director of this masterpiece, with Saltburn only being her third directed movie. She’s also directed Promising Young Woman starring Carey Mulligan, which is one of my favorite films of all time. I love the direction Fennell went with this project, as she gave us a movie filled with comedy, seduction, tension, art, and much more. There was so much that went into this film, and I believe the casting and characters were perfect.

Fennell also makes sure to mention that this film is “absolutely queer.” I loved this aspect of the movie, and I’m glad that Saltburn can be recognized as a queer movie. I’m just so happy these types of comedic and artistic movies are getting recognition in mainstream media. This movie isn’t for everyone, but I love seeing people on social media recommend this film!

Another big part of this movie that’s been trending on Twitter is the ending scene and the ending song. “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor has become a big trending sound on TikTok with everyone talking about their thoughts from the film. The ending scene of this film is super unexpected and fun, and you must see it for yourself.

Don’t miss out on the fun: make sure you watch Saltburn in theaters! I wouldn’t recommend bringing your parents (LOL) but I promise you’ll have a good time!
