Three weeks ago, an app took over my life. Okay, that might be a little dramatic, but it’s still kind of true. For almost a month I had been seeing ads for Monopoly Go! but I never downloaded it because I wasn’t sure if it was fun. Then I was sitting with a friend in a meeting, and she convinced me to download it. I haven’t stopped playing since. I play every day, multiple times a day.

If you haven’t seen the ads, Monopoly Go! is an app based on the classic board game. The premise of the game is to earn money and build landmarks on a variety of boards. Each board has a different theme, and as you progress through the game each one takes a little bit longer to build. The boards are themed after real cities and fictional places. The Monaco board and the New Orleans board are two of my favorite boards that I’ve completed.

You earn money by using your rolls to go around the board landing on different properties. Each one is worth a different amount, and as you build houses and hotels, the spots become more valuable. You can also land on the Chance and Community Chest spaces to earn other rewards. Chance spaces might give you extra rolls, additional money, or even a chance to advance toward the railroad spaces. Landing on a Community Chest space adds money to the chest. You get the chance to open it every couple of days for a large payout.

There are also in-game challenges that feature a variety of themes and tasks. One challenge might require you to land on certain spaces to earn the rewards while another challenge might have you earning tokens to spend so you can earn rewards. The main way to earn additional rolls is by completing these in-game challenges.

This brings me to the most frustrating part of the game — the limited number of rolls. Each day you get a set number and once you use them, they slowly regenerate throughout the day. You can also use real money to buy more, but I’m not that addicted! Connecting your Facebook to the game gives you a chance to earn more rolls as well, but it’s not guaranteed. You just have to hope that one of your Facebook friends starts playing. When they do, you get 100 free rolls. I’ve been lucky enough to earn rolls this way, but it has only happened a few times.

A big part of the game is the friends that you play with — that’s what makes it so fun and addicting. When you land on the railroad spaces, you get the opportunity to either complete a shutdown or a bank heist. Shutdowns let you destroy your friend’s landmarks and bank heists let you steal their Monopoly money.

I have convinced a few friends to join by sending them a link to join the game via Facebook. If enough people join using the link, you can earn additional rolls. If we are friends on Facebook, you should join so I can play more! If we aren’t friends on Facebook, you should start playing by using my invite link!
