Camila Dunne Is the People’s Princess, It’s True, I Voted for Her

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Daisy Jones and The Six has a star in its midst and it’s nobody in the band.

Camila Dunne, formerly Camila Alvarez, has stolen the hearts of the growing fanbase across all social media platforms. Her warmth and kind personality make her incredibly easy to fall in love with, not to mention the incredible performance by Camila Morrone which made her stand out among an incredibly talented cast.

But in my opinion, what gained her fan-favorite status was the sympathetic storyline presented for her character. Warning: spoilers ahead and if you want to avoid them I suggest you check out the full series now streaming on Amazon Prime

At the start of the show, Camila falls into a whirlwind romance fresh out of high school with the male lead protagonist, Billy Dunne, who kind of sucks. Beyond cheating on her when she’s pregnant, he repeatedly lets her down like when he left her to give birth to their daughter… alone. For the context of the relationship, it’s the early ’70s when they get hitched and she becomes pregnant with a beautiful little girl named Julia.

Camila comes from a big family with career aspirations of her own that she pushes aside to support the man she loves. Still, by the time her baby is born, women are just now getting the right to have their own bank accounts let alone the same opportunities as men. Imagine how difficult it would be to just up and leave even if she wanted to then. She also loves him, which I guess contributes to her staying but let’s not get into semantics.

In return for her loyalty, she gets betrayed. Billy cheats on her with a slew of women on tour during an intoxicated, drug-fueled bender while she’s at home, going through her pregnancy alone. After Camila finds out, he promises to change. He does for a while, gets sober and almost leaves the band for her and their family. However, this only lasts until he meets Daisy Jones, the future lead singer of their legendary band. They fall into a messy, mostly emotional affair that hurts his wife repeatedly.

Mind you, at that point, Camila has been nothing but loving and kind to everyone. She stays that way too. She’s also kind of the glue for the band. If not for Camila, Karen, the keyboardist, wouldn’t have joined the band. If not for Camila, their hit album Aurora wouldn’t exist because she’s the muse. Without her, Billy would’ve never rejoined the six. Heck, Daisy might have never joined in the first place if not for Camila advocating for her to Billy.

She’s a freaking saint. She’s also flawed, given her brief but popular affair with the band’s bassist, Eddie Roundtree. But after everything Billy’s put her through, who can be mad at her for getting her lick back? Especially with a man who adores her while her husband neglects their relationship and family in favor of the band and Daisy Jones.

Despite the mess she endures, she is the beating heart of the show. She’s there when people need her. She’s Billy’s rock during his struggle with addiction and she has hope for Daisy even when Daisy doesn’t have it for herself. She holds Karen’s hand while she makes one of the hardest decisions of her life and pushes Graham to go after the woman he loves. She’s a real girl’s girl, she stands up for herself and fights for what she loves. She’s there for everyone yet it seems like she’s never really given the same energy except by Eddie but he wants something she can’t give him. She’s flawed, empathetic and above all else, human with truly pure intentions.

Because of all of this, the audience roots for her. They watch for her, they want better for her, they want her to win and most importantly, they love her. While every character has likable qualities, nobody makes you fall in love with them the way Camila does. In the words of the great Oprah Winfrey herself, “She is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don’t know a better person.”

Camila Dunne may not be real but she will always be loved even though she’s gone, especially by me.
