FSU Freebies: 3 Ways To Get Stuff for Free Around Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

If you’re anything like me (and many other college students), you probably love free things. Fortunately, a college campus is the perfect place to run into freebies left and right. Here are a few secret places to get freebies around FSU that you may not know about, no charges necessary.

Off-Campus Housing

I can’t stress this one enough. I tell everyone I know that the best way to win prizes, from TVs and AirPods to coffee machines and food, is to follow different off-campus apartment complexes on Instagram. Usually, apartments will have raffles or opportunities to pick up free food on campus every month. You’re most likely to find the highest number of giveaways during signing season, which usually lasts from around September to November, but some complexes will offer freebies throughout the year.

An even bigger bonus is to figure out which apartments are being built. Because they’re trying to get as much traction for potential residents as possible, there are constant weekly opportunities. Nova Tally (where I’ll be living next year!) and Renegade Tallahassee are two new off-campus apartments that are currently being built, so be sure to check out their socials. And while you’re at it, consider taking a tour of their floor plans in case you’re still searching for a place to live.

Food Truck Fridays At The Lakefront

Unfortunately, this is fall semester exclusive, but Food Truck Fridays at The Rez is such a great way to get free food. With an array of different street food, there’s unlimited free food while supplies last on select Fridays. I personally have never gone, but I’ve heard from others that the food is delicious and not many people know about it, so it doesn’t get overcrowded. The Rez is about a 10 minute drive from the main campus and grants free admission with possession of a valid FSU ID card.

Market Wednesday

This one may seem obvious. However, most people underestimate the steals you can get at Market Wednesday. It’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a freebie every week, but there are countless opportunities for mostly food and sometimes even clothes or merch throughout the semester. With the rotation of different organizations every week, it’s likely that you can rack up some good finds over time. I’ve gotten free food, Chapstick, and even a sweatshirt for free by simply walking through and listening to whatever the different tables are promoting.

A Small Bonus: Landis Green

Of course, I have to mention Landis. In addition to all the mini things like free food, about once a semester there’s a brand pop-up shop. So far, I’ve been to the Coach and Maybelline pop-ups, receiving makeup products, ice cream, and small jewelry. The opportunities on Landis vary from day to day, but there’s always something at least once a week. So, if you’re strolling through on your way to class, try to keep your eyes peeled!

The biggest takeaway from this is that people are eager to throw free things — especially food — at college students. I’m always so excited to get freebies, and I’m sure plenty of others are, too. So take advantage of these perks while you can!
